Bazil

Bazil, a Tynnan tracker, was a valuable comrade to the Jedi Order during the era of the High Republic. Back in 132 BBY, a group of Jedi enlisted his skills for a mission that involved locating the Wookiee Jedi Master Kelnacca. Kelnacca was residing somewhere within the jungles of the planet Khofar. The team, headed by Master Sol and including Verosha "Osha" Aniseya, the sister of the Sith assassin Mae-ho "Mae" Aniseya—who was actively hunting Kelnacca—arrived on Khofar, at which point Bazil commenced tracking Kelnacca by following his scent.

During their travels, Bazil became isolated from the others, at which point he encountered Mae and promptly alerted the Jedi. Subsequently, Mae's Sith Master, known only as the Stranger, launched an assault on the Jedi, killing everyone except Sol during the resulting duel. Bazil managed to stay out of the conflict, later discovering the head of Osha's droid, Pip. The Tynnan then made his way back to the Jedi ship, where he followed Sol and Mae – the latter disguised to appear as her sister – as they boarded.

Biography

Tracking a Wookiee

Bazil led members of the Jedi Order into the forests of Khofar in search of Kelnacca

During the High Republic Era, the Tynnan tracker named Bazil was a friend to the Jedi Order. A mission in 132 BBY saw a group of Jedi hiring him to go to the planet Khofar. Their objective was to find Jedi Master Kelnacca, the Wookiee who had chosen to live alone within its jungles. Master Sol led the Jedi, who were trying to reach Kelnacca before the Sith assassin Mae-ho "Mae" Aniseya could hunt him down as part of her quest. Bazil went with the Jedi, as well as Aniseya's sister, Verosha "Osha" Aniseya, aboard a Polan-717 Jedi transport.

While in hyperspace, Jedi Knight Yord Fandar briefed the Jedi, and Bazil began sniffing at Pip, Osha's droid. The droid then sprayed a stream of water into the Tynnan's face after he roared at it. Osha apologized as Bazil wiped his fur, then asked Padawan Jecki Lon about him. Upon arriving at Khofar, the Jedi learned from the local inhabitants that Kelnacca had not been seen since he went into the forest. Fandar, who spoke Bazil's Tynnan language fluently, gave the tracker a piece of cloth so he could find the Wookiee. After sniffing the fabric, Bazil began to guide the Jedi towards Kelnacca.

Target acquired

Bazil cried out an alert when he found Mae.

Bazil eventually led the others to a grove of trees that served as a breeding ground for an eclipse of umbramoths. The Tynnan sensed something was wrong and stopped to growl his concerns. Sol urged the group to continue quickly and quietly, but Osha accidentally disturbed one of the umbramoths, which Sol killed, delaying the Jedi. Before long, Bazil became separated from the Jedi, who were unable to locate him.

With his visor down, Bazil soon found himself outside Kelnacca's shelter. Mae, who had decided to surrender to Kelnacca, tripped while heading for the shelter, landing in front of Bazil. She greeted the Tynnan, who roared, alerting the Jedi that he had found Mae. The assassin fled inside the shelter, while the Jedi and Osha rushed to Bazil's location. However, Mae discovered that the Stranger, her Sith Master, had killed Kelnacca. The Stranger soon emerged to attack the Jedi as night fell.

Chaos on Khofar

Bazil rushed through the forest as the Jedi and the Master dueled. Fandar, who Sol had ordered to take Osha back to the ship, spotted the tracker, and the pair began to follow him, stopping briefly when Osha insisted they should return to help. They became separated from Bazil again after pausing a second time and eventually returned to the fight. The Master killed all of the Jedi except for Sol in the skirmish but was carried away by umbramoths that Osha summoned using Pip's disconnected head as a light.

Later, Bazil found Pip's head shortly after the Master had slain the umbramoths. As the Sith walked away, Bazil picked it up and sniffed the droid's head before rushing off. Bazil returned to the Jedi starship, entering shortly after Sol and Mae, who had disguised herself as Osha. Carrying Pip's head, the Tynnan stopped in the hallway to sniff the air before following the two.

Personality and traits

Bazil was a tenacious hunter, scampering hurriedly as he led the Jedi on Khofar. He had brown and white fur and brown eyes. Bazil's height was 1.17 meters.

Skills and abilities

Bazil was a natural tracker with a hypersensitive nose that could detect targets at a distance. While on the hunt, the Tynnan became separated from the Jedi on multiple occasions, and Fandar believed they needed another tracker to track him down. Bazil spoke the Tynnan language. He could find a target with one whiff of their scent and would not give up, no matter the danger.

Equipment

As a tracker, Bazil wore a visor and helmet that he could use to provide sensory deprivation and focus on his sense of smell. Bazil wore a gray civilian robe while accompanying the Jedi on Khofar.

Behind the scenes

A Bazil–themed basil planter, instructions for which were posted on StarWars.com

Bazil was first seen in "Day," the fourth episode of The Acolyte, which was released on June 18, 2024 on Disney+. Hassan Taj performed the character, who was designed by Neal Scanlan and his team. Bazil was pictured in a poster for the series released on StarWars.com on May 4 of that year and was later identified in an article published on June 17 of that year. Although the Disney+ Audio Description for both "Day" and "Night" described Bazil as a Jedi, he is shown wearing a civilian robe, and his entry in the StarWars.com Databank confirms that he is an ally of the Order. Instructions for making a Bazil–themed basil planter were posted on StarWars.com on July 2, 2024.

Bazil's design includes elements of beavers and otters to match the description of his species, which originated in the 1979 novel Han Solo's Revenge by Brian Daley. His role in the story influenced his design, giving him a prominent snout to track his quarries and a visor and helmet to provide sensory deprivation to focus on his task. Marty Feldman's Igor in the comedy Young Frankenstein, who had a small stature but a large personality, was another inspiration. As a result, Bazil's scenes were shot to give him an equal presence to those around him.
