Felucian Garden Spread

aliases:

  • Felucian Kefta & Hummus Garden Spread

The vegetarian foodstuff known as Felucian Garden Spread, which is also referred to as Felucian Kefta & Hummus Garden Spread, was the creation of the Artiodac culinary artist Strono Tuggs. His inspiration stemmed from his time spent learning about Felucian agricultural practices at a farming establishment located on the world of Felucia. The dish featured an herb-infused hummus spread, a vegetable relish, and was accompanied by either flatbread or ronto wrappers, along with plant-based meatballs or Parwan Nutricakes.

Tuggs offered this spread at his roving eatery, Tuggs' Grub, in 34 ABY, when it was situated at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo within Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, a planet in the Outer Rim. Furthermore, he shared a recipe for an alternative rendition of the dish in his culinary book, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Description

Felucian Garden Spread, a vegetarian dish, existed in two forms: one as a recipe and the other as a restaurant offering. The foundation of both was a relish salad incorporating red and green produce, complemented by a blended herbaceous hummus. The restaurant version was garnished with flatbread pieces and a trio of vegetarian "meatballs," crafted from plant-based ingredients shaped into spheres. The recipe allowed for the substitution of ronto wrappers for flatbread, and Parwan Nutricakes, protein-rich patties, in place of the plant-derived meatballs. This spread was designed to be palatable for Felucians, Artiodacs, and humans alike.

History

The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook provides a visual representation of the dish as prepared following Strono Tuggs' instructions.

Prior to his employment with Maz Kanata, who operated a drinking establishment inside her fortress on the world Takodana, chef Strono Tuggs dedicated time to a farming operation on the lush planet Felucia. There, he acquired knowledge of Felucian agricultural and harvesting techniques, as well as the significance of utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients in his culinary creations. Drawing inspiration from the Felucian people and their wisdom, he conceived the Felucian Garden Spread, naming it in their honor.

In 34 ABY, subsequent to the destruction of Kanata's castle, Tuggs featured the dish at his mobile dining establishment, Tuggs' Grub, during its residency at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo within Black Spire Outpost on the Outer Rim planet Batuu. During that year, he also disseminated his recipes for the dish and its constituent parts in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. The writer and explorer Eloc Throno referenced the spread as Felucian Kefta & Hummus Garden Spread in his guidebook, Traveler's Guide to Batuu, noting its rich flavor despite the absence of meat. Around the same period, Tuggs incorporated his cookbook's Felucian Garden Spread recipe into a concise recipe pamphlet designed to enhance a Batuu visitor's understanding of the planet.

Behind the scenes

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

A Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo menu from the summer of 2019.

Felucian Garden Spread can be found in the physical world at the quick-service restaurant Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, located in the themed area Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. This area debuted at Disneyland Park on May 31 and at Disney's Hollywood Studios on August 29, 2019. The dish's introduction to the public was formally announced on February 27 of that year through articles published on StarWars.com and D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.

The inspiration for the dish came from the verdant planet Felucia. Brian Piasecki, the culinary director for concept development at Walt Disney World Resort, described Felucia as a "completely green planet" that lends itself well to vegetarian or plant-based diets. Piasecki noted that the kefta plant-based meatballs are crafted using an Impossible Foods vegan product designed to mimic the taste of meat.

Initially, Felucian Garden Spread was exclusively available during lunch hours. However, it has since been expanded to both lunch and dinner menus and has been rebranded as "Felucian Kefta & Hummus Garden Spread." The menu describes the dish as featuring "Impossible™ Meatballs, Herb Hummus, Tomato-Cucumber Relish, Pita."

The reference book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu, penned by Cole Horton and released on July 21, 2020, mentions Felucian Kefta & Hummus Garden Spread as a vegetarian offering at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. This aligns with the renaming of the dish in the theme park locations, suggesting it is an alternate name for the in-universe dish.

Adaptations

A recipe for the dish was featured in the 2019 cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, authored by Marc Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. The recipe incorporates Ronto Wrappers and Parwan Nutricakes, for which recipes are also included in the book. However, these can be substituted with pita bread and falafel, respectively. The hummus ingredients include black beans, tahini, minced garlic, olive oil, chopped parsley, lemon juice, oregano, cumin, salt, pepper, and cilantro. The salad consists of diced tomato and cucumber, chopped fresh mint, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Sumerak considered the spread to be among his favorite recipes in the collection, recommending its consumption with Parwan Nutricakes.

The 2020 non-canonical video game expansion The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu features Felucian Garden Spreads as a meal sold to the player's Sims for eight credits per serving at the Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo vendor in the Black Spire Outpost area. Upon their Sim's initial consumption of the meal, the recipe is automatically learned, enabling them to prepare it using stoves in their residential neighborhood.
