Fifth Brother's lightsaber

The double-bladed spinning lightsaber of the Fifth Brother was a weapon employed by the Jedi hunter Fifth Brother. This weapon was similar to other double-bladed spinning lightsabers used by members of the Imperial Inquisitors.

Specifications

The Fifth Brother's lightsaber in crescent formation.

This weapon incorporated a ringed emitter, designed to partially detach from the central cylindrical handgrip. This design permitted rapid rotation of the twin blades without requiring significant effort from the user. For a Jedi hunter such as an Inquisitor, this capability likely served both as a means of intimidating adversaries and as a defensive measure against frontal assaults. However, this feature also represented the weapon's key vulnerability. An opponent wielding a lightsaber could simply destroy the emitter, effectively severing the weapon, as Kanan Jarrus demonstrated during his final duel against the Grand Inquisitor aboard the Sovereign.

Furthermore, the lightsaber could be utilized for flight. By spinning the blades in a helicopter-like fashion, it generated sufficient lift to elevate the wielder off the ground.

History

The Fifth Brother threatens Sabine Wren.

Fifth Brother received training in the use of this lightsaber alongside his fellow Inquisitors at The Works on Coruscant, under the guidance of the Grand Inquisitor.

The Fifth Brother frequently employed this lightsaber when dispatched by Darth Vader with the Seventh Sister to pursue the Spectres. This pursuit led the pair into numerous duels against rebel Jedi, engaging in combat with the cell's Jedi members, Kanan Jarrus and his Padawan Ezra Bridger, as well as Phoenix Cell's former Jedi leader, Ahsoka Tano.

In 3 BBY on Malachor, Tano struck the Fifth Brother's weapon with one of her own white lightsabers, causing damage to the lightsaber. Disarmed as a result, the Fifth Brother was immediately slain by the former Sith Lord, Maul. The damaged weapon was subsequently lost.

Behind the scenes

The lightsaber of the Fifth Brother made its debut in "Relics of the Old Republic," the fourth episode of Star Wars Rebels' second season. This episode premiered at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2015.

Lightsaber prop used in Obi-Wan Kenobi

Sung Kang, the actor portraying the Fifth Brother, wielded the lightsaber in the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series. During an initial meeting with Dave Filoni and propmaster Brad Elliott, they discussed how to faithfully adapt the animated Inquisitor lightsabers into practical, realistic props. Filoni suggested that Elliott envision the live-action version as the primary design, with the animated version being an exaggerated interpretation. This approach allowed Elliott to maintain the established form factor from the animation while ensuring compatibility with human hands. The prop team dedicated considerable research to guarantee the lightsaber's accuracy to its Star Wars Rebels appearance. Adjustments were made to accommodate Kang's hand size. Elliott and his team took care to minimize the more delicate-looking aspects of the animated designs, and they ensured that the size of the rings and handles were appropriate for the intended character. The hero hilt used by Kang was interactive and featured illumination capabilities.
