The Fondor Droid Mod represented a form of artificial intelligence that could be integrated into a Fondor Haulcraft. Luthen Rael had such a system installed within the modified cockpit of the very same light freighter he utilized as his personal transport during 5 BBY.
Serving as an intelligent and skilled artificial intelligence companion, Luthen Rael's Droid Mod was a valuable asset to the Rebel spymaster. Functioning as both a co-pilot and navigator for Rael, it was entrusted with the task of suggesting the most efficient travel routes and executing planetary landings based on a variety of pre-programmed patterns. Further, the droid was programmed to safeguard the vessel from intruders, using its photoreceptor located in the ship's cockpit to monitor the behavior of any unaccompanied passengers, and its audio sensor to detect Rael's characteristic whistle, which it interpreted as a command to unlock the ship. Through its integrated vocabulator, the droid could also communicate with Rael, offering suggestions or voicing concerns regarding the ship's operational safety and performance.
Because it was linked to all of the ship's systems, the Mod also functioned as both a gunner and a commander during combat. It could identify enemy vessels utilizing the ship's radar systems, relaying pertinent information regarding their model and capabilities to Rael, who would then propose the best course of action based on the threat level. The Mod could independently target hostile ships, assuming control of the ship's laser cannon turret, laser beams, and projectile launcher countermeasures to neutralize them, all while Rael focused on piloting the ship to safety. The Mod could also rapidly locate and assign false transponder codes to the ship, allowing it to evade detection by Imperial patrols.
The Droid Mod belonging to Luthen Rael was instrumental in assisting Rael when he landed on Ferrix, where his employer intended to meet with Cassian Jeron Andor to either enlist him into his spy network or purchase a stolen Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit. During the landing sequence, the Mod advised Rael to set down 2.3 kilometers from the city, explaining, when questioned by an irritated Luthen, that it was the safest location it could identify. Later, when Rael and Andor were escaping from pursuing Pre-Mor Enforcement corpos, Rael quickly whistled to the Mod, which recognized the signal and promptly unlocked the ship, allowing him and Andor to make a swift escape.
After arriving on Aldhani, where Rael was scheduled to drop Andor off with Vel Sartha's team, Andor was briefly left alone in the Fondor's cockpit and entertained the idea of stealing the vessel. However, he was dissuaded when the Mod turned its photoreceptor unit towards him and inquired if it could be of assistance. Later that day, the Mod was tasked with taking over the controls and successfully executed Landing Protocol 037 to land on Coruscant.
One month later, the Mod provided assistance to Rael when he was ambushed by Imperial forces above Segra Milo. It located and assigned Alderaan Trade Guild transponder ID 12912505 to the ship, armed its countermeasures, and, prompted by Rael, deployed them to destroy a pursuing TIE Boarding Craft and a TIE/ln space superiority starfighter. Simultaneously, it performed the hyperspace calculations necessary for Rael's successful escape.
