The comic tale, "Ghosts of Kashyyyk, Part 1," depicts Chewbacca's assistance in the defense of Kashyyyk against a First Order attack. John Barber penned the story, while Derek Charm provided the illustrations. It saw publication in Star Wars Adventures (2017) 27 on October 30, 2019.
Chewbacca, along with Nien Nunb and Beaumont Kin, found themselves under fire from First Order TIE fighters above the planet of Kashyyyk. As the First Order implemented a blockade of the planet, Chewbacca's mission was to aid the resident Wookiees. Skillfully, Chewbacca evaded and eliminated numerous TIE fighters. Daz Crano, a Nautolan, arrived in her X-wing starfighter to lend support against the attacking TIE fighters.
The Millennium Falcon descended to Kashyyyk, where First Order stormtroopers were compelling Wookiees into forced labor. Upon the arrival of the Falcon and other Resistance operatives, the stormtroopers surrendered. In the skies above, more Resistance starships had engaged the First Order blockade, but for the time being, everyone else was stranded on the planet's surface.
Chewbacca embraced the nearby Wookiees, but his demeanor shifted abruptly as he gazed upward, becoming visibly angry. He yelled at Kin, who was unable to comprehend his Wookiee language, and then sprinted off into the Black Forest, accompanied by Terbus the porg. Soon after, Kin and Crano pursued Chewbacca into the forest. They lost sight of Chewbacca as he ventured deeper into the forest, recognized as the most perilous location on Kashyyyk. The Wookiees held the belief that the forest was haunted, and it had been the site of numerous battles throughout history.
Chewbacca and Terbus continued their journey until they spotted stormtroopers guarding their 125-Z treadspeeder bike. Chewbacca stealthily approached the stormtroopers from behind and incapacitated them. Suddenly, more stormtroopers appeared, led by a commander. The commander commanded his stormtroopers to unleash fire upon the Wookiee as he darted behind the speeder bike. The speeder bike detonated, sending Chewbacca hurtling into the nearby foliage. As he and Terbus concealed themselves, the stormtroopers initiated their search.
