The Golan I Space Defense Platform, often shortened to Golan I station or simply Golan I, represented a space station class utilized by both the Galactic Republic and its successor, the Galactic Empire.
This class of space station, known as the Golan I Space Defense Platform, the Golan I station, or just Golan I, was produced by Golan Arms and was the first model in its line. The Golan I boasted an armament of fourteen medium turbolasers mounted in turrets on both its port and starboard sides, along with three dorsal and two ventral turret-mounted proton torpedo launchers, as well as three heavy tractor beam projectors on each of its port and starboard sides.
Despite its ability to withstand some combat damage, the Golan I could be overwhelmed by a modest enemy fleet, even with its complement of twenty-four TIE fighter series starfighter craft. Its support craft also included four patrol ships and four shuttles. The station had enough supplies to last for two years and was operated by a crew of 5,000 officers and other personnel, with the capacity to house an additional 10,000 individuals. Being a fixed platform, it lacked a navigation computer and hyperdrive, but it was equipped with a long-range sensor.
Initially, the Golan I functioned as a planetary defense station to free up combat resources. It continued in this role until it was eventually replaced, after which it was assigned to protect less important locations and serve as a customs station.
During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, the Golan I station was deployed, enabling the Republic Navy to allocate naval assets to the war effort. Following the war, the Golan I remained in service with the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy, but it was superseded in both size and firepower by the Golan-II and Golan III. Consequently, the Golan I was reassigned to defend less strategically vital planets and secondary sites.
The Imperial Office of Customs procured a significant number of Golan Is for use as system stations beyond the Core Worlds. These stations coordinated operations for ships and personnel across a large area and acted as customs checkpoints. There was an incident where one station was surrounded by several Interdictor-class heavy cruisers while positioned above a planet.
The Golan I Space Defense Platform was first established as Star Wars canon within the 2020 Starships and Speeders supplement from Fantasy Flight Games.
