The Great Progenitor holds the distinction of being the original Drengir, a species characterized as sentient carnivorous plants. In the era of approximately 2500 BBY, the Drengir entered into an alliance with the Sith. For a time, they collaborated; however, around that same year, the Sith engineered the Great Progenitor's entrapment on the derelict Amaxine Space Station, forcing her into a state of sleep. When a contingent of Jedi and other travelers discovered the Drengir on the space station, the Great Progenitor experienced an awakening, which subsequently triggered the awakening of numerous other Drengir. Ultimately, a Jedi team led by Avar Kriss, supported by the Hutt Cartel, brought about her defeat. Following this defeat, Myarga Anjiliac Atirue expressed a desire to kill her; however, the Jedi opted to imprison her temporarily within the Bogan Vault aboard the space station Starlight Beacon pending a transfer to a more secure holding location. Nib Assek mistakenly labored under the impression that the Great Progenitor had perished. The station met its end through destruction in 230 BBY at the hands of Nihil pirates, leading to its descent into the ocean of the planet Eiram. In the aftermath of this event, both Republic Defense Coalition forces and, in due course, Jedi were deployed to scour the oceans of Eiram for the Progenitor amidst the wreckage of Starlight. Upon learning of the Drengir's resurgence, Kriss made a mental note that she had lost awareness of the Great Progenitor's location and had operated under the assumption that Jedi Master Estala Maru, the overseer of Jedi activities on Starlight, had ensured her relocation to another facility. Although she knew Maru was diligent, Kriss realized she had failed to confirm that the transfer had actually occurred, acknowledging that delays had been a recurring issue, particularly in the station's final weeks when it was repurposed to assist with various emergency situations.
In actuality, the Great Progenitor survived the crash and entered a state of dormancy. Eventually, the Progenitor received a warning from her Drengir on the Outer Rim planet Banchii regarding an impending plague known as the blight, which served as the catalyst for her reawakening. This warning also caused Drengir to sprout on Eiram, and they sought to exploit the inhabitants of Barraza City to construct a vessel for escaping Eiram and avoiding the approaching blight. While this endeavor proved unsuccessful, the Great Progenitor was confident that they would persist in their efforts, that they would endure regardless of the consequences for the galaxy, and that she would emerge from the depths of Eiram's ocean.
The subsequent battle on Mulita against the Great Progenitor received a mention within the botanical compendium "The One With the Green Thumb." Furthermore, Sarlacc culture acknowledged the existence of a great progenitor, although it remains uncertain whether this entity is identical to the Great Progenitor.
The initial appearance of the Great Progenitor, albeit without a specific name, occurred in the 2021 young-adult novel titled The High Republic: Into the Dark, authored by Claudia Gray. Her identification and visual representation were later established in a flashback sequence featured in the fourth issue of the comic series Star Wars: The High Republic, penned by Cavan Scott, illustrated by Ario Anindito, and released by Marvel Comics on April 7, 2021.
