Gulu, a human male prospector, existed during the time known as the Imperial Era. He made his home on the planet of Koboh and shared a relationship with Gido, a Trodatome.
Before the events of 9 BBY, Gulu was among the initial wave of prospectors on Koboh, searching for the valuable priorite. However, he soon abandoned this pursuit due to his lack of expertise and aversion to outdoor activities. Gulu and Gido's paths crossed as they both ridiculed their fellow prospectors, particularly Rumsy Forlo, whom Gulu mockingly called "Clumsy Rumsy," much to Gido's amusement. Their relationship began because they found each other less objectionable than the other prospectors.
Gulu often reflected on his early days on Koboh, fondly reminiscing about them. When he and Gido initially settled in Rambler's Reach Outpost, he felt life was better as the Outpost was largely deserted, leaving them undisturbed. He also attributed the changes to the opening of Pyloon's Saloon, though he preferred the previous owner, Abel Drongite, over the eventual proprietor, Greez Dritus. He recalled that Drongite would allow customers to accumulate debts for hundreds of cycles and even let patrons sleep on the floor if necessary.
He frequently reminisced about the events he had witnessed in the Outpost since his arrival. He remembered the first prospectors to arrive, as well as the heatwave that caused Gido's membrane to melt and the aphren swarm that serves as the town's food source. He believed that he and Gido were the last of a dying breed following Drongite's demise at the hands of the Bedlam Raiders before 9 BBY.
On one occasion, he encountered a Mandalorian warrior and contemplated telling her to leave, but he only did so in his thoughts to ensure his own safety. When Gulu accused him of lacking courage, he reminded Gido that he had repaired his roof in the rain, thus demonstrating his worth.
In 9 BBY, they encountered the Jedi Knight Cal Kestis and the droid BD-1 outside Pyloon's. During the Jedi's stay in the Outpost, they entertained him with their tales of scorn for their fellow townsfolk. The pair were concerned that the locals' persistent cowardice would lead to their downfall, leaving no one left for them to make fun of.
He disapproved of the Bedlam Raiders' presence on the planet, complaining that they were always scavenging through the scrapheaps in the Outpost. He later suggested that a town collective should be formed to oppose the Empire following their increased presence on the planet and the appearance of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer above. He proposed that they could disrupt Imperial communications channels and sabotage their supply lines. However, he quickly abandoned the idea after realizing it would require more effort than he was willing to expend.
Despite the changes and the Imperial occupation of Koboh, he admitted that he was too old and set in his ways to leave the planet.
Gulu was generally ill-tempered and disliked most other beings. Along with Gido, he spent much of his time complaining and spreading rumors about other people. He likened mocking Turgle to drinking water and openly questioned why Caij Vanda wore her hat in public, claiming it made her head resemble a dinner plate. He also dismissed Tulakt's fortune-telling abilities and referred to Moran as a pathetic whiner.
While Gulu was reluctant to form friendships with most, he did attempt to make some friends during his time in the Outpost, but without much success. He recalled how Vork died in a landspeeder accident, Drillo perished attempting to ride a gorocco, and Twakuhka was incinerated while juggling thermal detonators. Pi'tar left because he found work off-world, but he died soon after in a shuttle crash.
Gulu made his debut in the 2023 video game Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Tommie Earl Jenkins provides his voice in the game.
