During the Galactic Empire's reign, Hirang Birren, a Nithorn of the male persuasion, was employed as a talent scout for cruise ships. In 10 BBY, Birren was present at a gathering on the First Light, the personal yacht belonging to Dryden Vos, the leader of the Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate, as it made its way to the planet of Vandor.
While aboard the starship, Birren was listening to a musical performance rendered by the singers Aurodia Ventafoli and Luleo Primoc, and without realizing it, started singing along with them utilizing his own guttural birdsong. With a beverage in his hand and a human woman by his side, Birren strolled past the outlaw Han Solo on the yacht's viewing platform. Subsequently, he and the woman positioned themselves at one of the platform's windows to converse.

Hirang Birren's character was brought to life by puppeteer Brian Herring in the 2018 Anthology movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Nithorn's conceptual design for the film was created by senior sculptor Luke Fisher and given the title "Maverick 015 Version A." Chris Clarke engineered the mechanics of Birren's mask, and he also manipulated the mask's facial expressions during the filming process. Due to the limited visibility afforded by the mask, Herring received direction from puppeteer Colin Purves through an earpiece while on set.
During production, the character was colloquially referred to as "parrot man." The companion book Solo: A Star Wars Story The Official Guide, penned by Pablo Hidalgo and released concurrently with the film, formally identified the character as Hirang Birren—an anagram derived from Herring's surname.
