Cheklev, whose full name is Hivrekh'wao'Cheklev, was a male Devaronian originating from the planet of Devaron. He held the rank of Jedi Knight within the New Jedi Order throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War, which spanned from 25 to 29 ABY. When the Yuuzhan Vong, invaders from beyond the galaxy, offered to halt their campaign of conquest if the Jedi were handed over, Cheklev's own people, the Devaronians, betrayed him by attempting to sell him to the enemy. Although he was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, he managed to escape and find his way to Eclipse Station, a Jedi base located on the planet of Eclipse.
While at Eclipse Station, he oversaw a team of scientists who were analyzing fragments of the destroyed starship known as the Sweet Surprise. This ship was involved in a scheme to smuggle a group of Jedi-hunting creatures called voxyn onto Coruscant, the galactic capital. Later, Cheklev made a significant contribution to the effort that defeated the Yuuzhan Vong. After the end of the war, he was present at a Jedi conclave held on the living world of Zonama Sekot.
Cheklev, whose complete designation was Hivrekh'wao'Cheklev, was a male Devaronian from the world of Devaron. During the period of the Yuuzhan Vong War, he served as a Jedi Knight within the ranks of the New Jedi Order. The Yuuzhan Vong, hailing from beyond the galaxy, initiated their invasion in 25 ABY to serve their gods. The Jedi actively supported the New Republic in resisting these bloodthirsty invaders. In the second year of the war, the Yuuzhan Vong offered to cease their attacks in exchange for the surrender of the Jedi, leading to widespread resentment against the Jedi Knights who were struggling to protect the galaxy. While on his homeworld, Cheklev was betrayed when his fellow Devaronians attempted to sell him to the Yuuzhan Vong. Despite being captured, he managed to escape. He rejoined the Jedi by utilizing the Great River, a network of hyperspace routes and safe havens designed to protect fugitive Jedi from their pursuers.
In 27 ABY, Cheklev was stationed at Eclipse Station, a Jedi outpost situated on the Deep Core world of Eclipse. After Plaan, a Weequay, was foiled in his attempt to smuggle several voxyn—creatures created by the Yuuzhan Vong specifically to hunt Jedi—onto Coruscant, the galactic capital, fragments of Plaan's destroyed starship, the Sweet Surprise, were transported to Eclipse Station for examination. Cilghal, a Jedi healer, assigned various Jedi Knights tasks related to locating the voxyn queen, the source from which the creatures were cloned. Cheklev was tasked with analyzing the wreckage of the Sweet Surprise. He dedicated himself to this task, keeping the twelve scientists working alongside him fully occupied. Cilghal was soon able to determine that the queen was located on the planet Myrkr after discovering olbio leaves, flora native to Myrkr, within the stomach of a captured voxyn corpse.
In 29 ABY, the Jedi and the Galactic Alliance, the successor to the New Republic, achieved victory over the Yuuzhan Vong. Cheklev was instrumental in this triumph. Following the conclusion of the war, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker summoned all surviving Jedi to Zonama Sekot, a living planet in the Unknown Regions that had played a crucial role in ending the war. Cheklev was among those who attended the Conclave on Zonama Sekot. Skywalker addressed the assembly, urging them to consider how they could best serve the Force in the aftermath of the war. Years later, the scientist Mammon Hoole wrote about Cheklev, claiming that he was the most notable male Devaronian Jedi in history.
As a Force-sensitive Knight within the New Jedi Order, Cheklev possessed considerable abilities. He demonstrated his capabilities by escaping Yuuzhan Vong imprisonment early in the conflict, and later by contributing significantly to the war's resolution. Cheklev also possessed scientific aptitude, which Cilghal utilized by assigning him to lead a scientific team in the analysis of the Sweet Surprise wreckage. According to Mammon Hoole, Cheklev was the most significant male Devaronian Jedi in galactic history.
Author Troy Denning created Hivrekh'wao'Cheklev for his 2001 novel, The New Jedi Order: Star by Star, the ninth installment in The New Jedi Order series. The character, referred to only as "Cheklev," was briefly mentioned as overseeing a group of scientists studying the Sweet Surprise wreckage. Denning did not specify Cheklev's sex, species, or explicitly identify him as a Jedi. Daniel Wallace's 2002 article, Who's Who in the New Jedi Order, published in issue 57 of the Star Wars Insider magazine, established Cheklev as a male Devaronian Jedi Knight, provided his full name and a concise backstory, and included an image of him. Cheklev was later referenced in James Luceno's 2003 novel, The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force, the concluding book of The New Jedi Order series, and in the 2006 reference book The New Essential Guide to Alien Species. Both works misspelled his name, rendering it as "Hivrech'wao'Cheklev" and "Hivrekh'wao'cheklev," respectively. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 2008, included an entry on the character that was almost a direct copy of the information presented in Who's Who in the New Jedi Order.
