Hyperdrive (Punch It!)

Hyperdrive (Punch It!) was a fizzy, non-alcoholic drink that tasted like berries and other fruits. This red and teal refreshment started out in the Canto Bight casinos found on the desert planet of Cantonica. It was a favorite of weary gamblers who needed an energy boost. Later, in 34 ABY, it became available at Oga's Cantina within Black Spire Outpost on the world of Batuu. The Artiodac cook Strono Tuggs even shared the drink's recipe in his recipe book, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Description

Hyperdrive (Punch It!) was a non-alcoholic beverage offered in galactic drinking establishments. This bubbly punch combined teal berry flavors and liquids with crushed ice. A red fruit puree was added on top, eventually settling to the bottom. Safe for humans to consume, the beverage provided a boost of energy. Its name is shared with the hyperdrives that propelled starships to lightspeed, as well as the phrase "punch it," which pilots used to command hyperdrive activation.

History

This punch's origins lie in the Canto Bight casinos of the desert planet Cantonica. It was a well-liked drink that helped gamblers stay awake so they could continue gambling until their credits were gone. By 34 ABY, it was being served at Oga's Cantina in Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, a planet in the Outer Rim. The cantina even used a hyperdrive for its power supply. During this period, Palob Godalhi, the host of the Black Spire Outpost radio station BSO 401.72, would sometimes encourage listeners to visit the cantina and order the drink.

Following the Battle of Takodana in 34 ABY, Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs released his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. He included the beverage's recipe, as he enjoyed its strong taste and energizing properties. He likened its energy-boosting ability to a theoretical digestible form of coaxium, a type of hypermatter used as fuel for hyperdrives. Around that same time, Tuggs also put the punch recipe from his cookbook into a small recipe pamphlet, designed to help visitors to Batuu learn more about the planet.

Behind the scenes

Hyperdrive (Punch It!), as it is served at the real-world Oga's Cantina

Hyperdrive (Punch It!) is among the non-alcoholic drinks offered to patrons at the real-world Oga's Cantina, located in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge themed areas of both Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios. It was officially revealed to the public on February 27, 2019, through an article on the D23: The Official Disney Fan Club website. It became available for purchase when Galaxy's Edge opened at the parks on May 31 and August 29 of that year, respectively. A video posted on July 24 by the Disney Parks Blog showed the drink being prepared and mentioned that the in-universe cantina was powered via a hyperdrive. The menu describes it as "Powerade® Mountain Berry Blast, White Cranberry Juice, Black Cherry Purée, and Sprite®."

A recipe for the drink, intended for out-of-universe use, can be found in the 2019 cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, authored by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak. The suggested ingredients include white cranberry juice or white grape juice, a blue sports drink with berry flavoring, lemon-lime soda, and black cherry purée.
