Official Description

Anni, a young pilot who finds her mother's affection overbearing, is forced to team up with her for a chaotic family race at the academy. Throughout the race, their relationship faces challenges presented by the environment, their aging vehicle, rival racers, and their own differences!

Plot Summary

Introduction

During the time of the New Republic Era, Wedge Antilles makes a public announcement regarding the annual family race held at the Hanna City Flight Academy on Chandrila. He will be hosting this yearly event that celebrates both flight trainees and their families. A Jawa then scavenges the billboard displaying Antilles' message for usable parts.

Family Dynamics

Meanwhile, Annisoukaline Kalfus, a Twi'lek teenager, is watching Antilles' broadcast on a holoscreen. Her mother, Kalina Kalfus, is initially playing a guitar before switching to using a blow torch to repair their astromech droid, Z-1. Anni mentions that she is about to leave for the Academy, which gets her mother's attention. Kalina then inquires whether she is going there to race. Anni denies this and asks about Z-1. After working on the droid's pulley system, Kalina declares that he is now fully repaired.

The droid stretches his body, but this causes him to lose balance and fall. Z-1 then plays a video showing a younger Anni and Kalina together in a starfighter while Kalina performs the Ryloth Roll. As Anni prepares to leave, Kalina insists on hugging her and giving her lunch. Kalina then tells Z-1 that her efforts will be worthwhile when her daughter graduates from the Flight Academy. Kalina then realizes that her daughter has forgotten her lunch, but Anni has already left on her transport.

The Family Competition

At the Hanna City Flight Academy, many airspeeders and starfighters are lined up for a race. Antilles uses this opportunity to promote various branded products at his merchandise stand. While Anni is walking, a Didynon pilot questions Anni's choice not to participate in the race. Anni falsely claims that her mother is unavailable. A human female pilot named Julan Van Reeple makes fun of Kalina and Anni's spacetug, calling it a porta potty. When Antilles introduces Julan and her pilot mother Dorota Van Reeple, Julan gives high-fives. The Didynon then asks Anni why she allows Julan to insult her. His Wookiee companion roars in agreement.

As the pilots prepare their vehicles, two Didynon racers laugh at a Wookiee child who is accompanying his Wookiee racer parents in another speeder. The Wookiee child responds by tearing the arms off his soft toy, which causes the Didynons to close their canopy in fear. Julan and Dorota get into their black, dagger-shaped racer. Anni watches from the grandstand. Before the race can begin, the droid holding the racing flag is distracted by a bra that has fallen. Kalina then arrives in her box-shaped speeder with Z-1 and calls out to her daughter. Anni runs away in embarrassment but returns when her mother calls out to her.

The Belated Participants

Kalina informs her daughter that she forgot her lunch. Anni responds that she didn't need to come, but Kalina replies that she can make up for the work hours she missed. Kalina then learns about the family race from the announcer. Julan and Dorota tell Kalina and Anni to move their space tug. Kalina decides to participate in the race at the last minute, which greatly upsets Anni. The racers then speed through the streets of Hanna City.

The Didynon pilot accidentally removes the steering wheel, causing his vehicle to crash to the ground. Anni tries to discourage her mother, but she is determined to participate in the family race. Kalina then expresses her disappointment that her daughter had kept the race a secret from her. The Wookiee family's speeder then drifts off course after their child leads them astray. Kalina then catches up with the Van Reeples' speeder. Anni then tells Kalina that she is embarrassed by her mother, their speeder, and Z-1. This makes Kalina sad. While Kalina is distracted, the Van Reeples ram their speeder into the Kalfus' spacetug, causing it to crash through a billboard.

Anni is shocked by the Van Reeples' unfair tactics, but Kalina is undeterred and tells Z-1 to activate the thrusters. They then discover that Z-1 is clinging to the back of the space tug. Kalina tells Anni that those are live cables and encourages her to take control of the vehicle while she helps Z-1. Anni is surprised that what she considers to be a "piece of junk" is still able to fly despite the damage. She is also relieved to hear that her mother has rescued Z-1 and that the two are holding onto a grappling cable. Kalina then encourages Anni to continue the race.

Mother-Daughter Bonding

Despite the Van Reeples shooting at the Kalfus' space tug with a Death Star–shaped laser cannon, the space tug recovers and manages to move ahead of the Van Reeples' speeder. Julan attempts to shoot the space tug but misses. Dorota then takes the controls from her daughter and prepares to fire their laser cannon. Anni then performs the Ryloth Roll with her space tug, while her mother and Z-1 are still clinging on. While the Van Reeples are distracted, they collide with a structure, causing their vehicle to flip over.

A family hug

With Kalina and Z-1 safely on top of the space tug, Anni takes the space tug to the finish line, winning the race. Meanwhile, Julan complains that it is unfair as she is being smothered by the airbag. Antilles then announces that the Kalfus family has won the race. When Kalina remarks that her daughter has learned something at the Flight Academy, Anni replies that she has learned a lot from her mother. She then apologizes for not telling her mother about the race. Anni then admits that Kalina can be embarrassing. Kalina then jokes that she is embarrassing because she is her mother.
