An Imperial-class starport, alternatively referred to as an Imperial class starport, which was previously designated as a Republic class starport, represented a specific category of starport.
The Imperial-class starport stood out as the premier type of starport. Exhibiting modernity and considerable luxury, this port type was primarily located on the most developed and commercial worlds. These ports frequently extended across hundreds of kilometers, accommodating the traffic of thousands of vessels each day.
The Imperial-class starport boasted an impressive collection of docking bays, areas for ship storage, and zones dedicated to maintenance. Furthermore, it provided the most opulent conveniences for both ship crews and their passengers. Its maintenance facilities were capable of delivering swift and top-tier repairs and upgrades, though these services could be quite costly.
In general, the Imperial-class starport served as a significant hub for trade. It was often linked to other Imperial-class starports via a major trade route. It was common for numerous merchants to maintain offices within the port itself, allowing starship captains to manage their affairs without needing to venture outside the starport's boundaries.
The customs office within this type of port was typically manned by highly skilled officers equipped with portable scanners. Even minor violations were addressed with the full force of the law, intended to deter potential troublemakers.
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the Imperial Military typically maintained a substantial presence at Imperial-class starports. Control of the starport, along with the Imperial Navy, implemented rigorous ship and captain identification protocols aimed at identifying and removing smugglers and other unwanted spacers.
During the initial years of the New Republic, this classification's designation remained unchanged.
