It has been one year since the Mon Calamari Orbital Shipyards were freed. Ania Solo, the Imperial Knight named Jao Assam, the Mon Calamari engineer Sauk, and the assassin droid AG-37 begin their pursuit of the renegade Sith Darth Wredd. Darth Wredd is currently leading an insurrection against the One Sith. Jao, having experienced a Force vision depicting Darth Wredd's assault on Empress Marasiah Fel, who leads the new Galactic Federation Triumvirate, is resolved to thwart Wredd's scheme. At Ania Solo's old junkyard located on Carreras Minor's moon, a mysterious masked bounty hunter eliminates a group of creditors who have arrived to collect Ania's outstanding debts.
In a parallel sequence, AG-37's freighter maneuvers through a field of orbital mines and touches down at Lasgo Port. Facing a shortage of credits, Ania and her comrades decide to transport a consignment to Lasgo Port. Ania makes an unsuccessful attempt to train a yarthul to earn some money, but she loses her comlink in the process. Shortly thereafter, Jao discovers a wanted poster with Ania Solo's picture, accusing her of murdering an Imperial Knight. When questioned, Ania responds defensively and vaguely. Before Jao can extract any more information, they come across a damaged starship adrift in space. Jao's Imperial comm droid, which he adopted, detects signs of life aboard the seemingly disabled vessel. Ania and her allies decide to offer assistance to the crew.
While boarding the crippled ship, Ania is reunited with Ramid, a former romantic interest. After a passionate greeting, Ramid explains that his starship's systems were damaged by the orbital mines. While Ania's companions return to their ship to get some repair tools, Ramid and his crew abduct and restrain Ania. They then initiate a rapid hyperspace jump, but not before firing upon AG-37's freighter. Thanks to Jao's swift action, they avoid destruction. However, AG-37, Sauk, and Jao soon realize that Ania has been taken captive.
