Plot summary

It has been a year since the liberation of the Mon Calamari Orbital Shipyards. The Imperial Knight Jao Assam, Ania Solo, the Mon Calamari engineer Sauk, and the assassin droid AG-37 begin a mission to track down the renegade Sith Darth Wredd, who is leading an insurgency against the One Sith. Jao experienced a Force vision where Darth Wredd was attacking Empress Marasiah Fel, the leader of the new Galactic Federation Triumvirate, and he is determined to stop his plot. While visiting Lasgo Port, Ania is abducted by Ramid, a former lover, who then escapes into hyperspace.

Aboard AG-37's freighter, AG-37, Jao, and Sauk try to locate Ania by tracing her communications, but they are unsuccessful. They pick up a signal from her comlink, but quickly remember that she gave it up during a yarthul–taming contest on Lasgo Port. On Ramid's starship, Ania Solo manages to subdue her Klatooinian guard, but Ramid and his Twi'lek pilot quickly disarm her. While escorting Ania back to her "cell," he reveals his bitterness toward her for abandoning him at an Imperial labor camp during the Second Imperial Civil War. Ramid found out about the bounty on Ania's head and plans to turn her over to the Galactic Triumvirate. Ania attempts to explain her actions, but Ramid refuses to listen. Running low on fuel, Ramid and his crew travel to the harsh fourth planet of a distant system, where molten silica and glass rain from the sky.

On Coruscant, the Imperial Knight Master Yalta Val learns about the Imperial bounty placed on Ania's head from Admiral Gar Stazi. He challenges his superior, Master Jao Assam, but Jao insists on bringing Teemen Alton's killer to justice. In uncharted space, Ania's friends continue to look for her. Although Jao doubts Ania's innocence, Sauk and AG-37 speak highly of her character. Sauk remembers that Ania helped him find food and shelter despite being a complete stranger. AG-37 also tells a story of a past encounter with Ania's ancestor, the smuggler Han Solo, which led him to promise to protect his descendants. AG-37 also reveals that he met Ania in the Selvatas system near the end of the Civil War. Ania had escaped from an Imperial prison camp on Drash-So, and AG-37 helped her leave the planet on his freighter.

On the glass rain planet, Ramid's starship is attacked by an unidentified TIE Bomber, resulting in the death of the ship's pilot and damage to the ship's systems. With his pilot dead, Ramid forces Ania to fly the starship to safety. After much struggle, she manages to crash-land the damaged starship on the desolate surface of that planet. The TIE Bomber's pilot is revealed to be a mysterious bounty hunter seeking to collect the bounty on Ania's head. She approaches Ramid's starship and demands that Ania emerge if she is still alive.
