Lothal Spicebrew, also known as spicebrew or spice brew, was a foamy tan alcoholic beverage. This drink was served at Old Jho's Pit Stop, a cantina situated in the Jhothal outpost on the planet of Lothal. It became the signature beverage of the bar's owner, Jho, an Ithorian who gained renown because of it. On the fifteenth annual Empire Day, which celebrated the founding of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, a Rodian named Tsoklo consumed a glass of spicebrew. Furthermore, the bounty hunter Dengar referenced spicebrew in a metaphor during 3 ABY.
Strono Tuggs, an Artiodac chef, also prepared Lothal Spicebrew using Jho's original recipe. He did this after visiting the Ithorian's cantina sometime after Jho's execution by the Empire for aiding suspected rebels. Tuggs then included the recipe in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which was released in 34 ABY.
The first appearance of Lothal Spicebrew in the new Star Wars canon was in "Empire Day," the eighth episode of the first season of Star Wars Rebels, an animated series. This episode aired on Disney XD on November 17, 2014, although the drink was unnamed at the time. It was later given the name "spicebrew" in Ezra's Duel with Danger, a junior novel adaptation written by Michael Kogge in 2015. This novel adapted the Star Wars Rebels episodes "Empire Day," "Gathering Forces," and "Path of the Jedi." In Marvel Comics' tenth issue of the Star Wars: Bounty Hunters comic-book series, written by Ethan Sacks and released on March 17, 2021, the name was written as two separate words: "spice brew."
The recipe book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak and released in 2019, was the first source to identify the drink as "Lothal Spicebrew." The out-of-universe recipe for Lothal Spicebrew includes ingredients such as stout beer, condensed milk, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and brandy. Monroe-Cassel considered the Lothal Spicebrew recipe to be one of her favorite recipes in the collection. Spicebrew was initially created for MedStar II: Jedi Healer, the second book in the MedStar Duology, a Star Wars Legends novel written by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry in 2004.
