Luggabeast

Luggabeasts were a species of quadruped creatures, lacking sentience, that inhabited locations throughout the galaxy. Commonly seen on frontier planets, these beasts possessed masks permanently affixed to their faces. Their inherent strength and work ethic were greatly augmented through implanted mechanical systems. Remarkably, they subsisted without the need for food or water, instead receiving nourishment directly through wired nutrient delivery. In the decades after the Battle of Endor, luggabeasts became a common sight on Jakku, a desert world. There, the native Teedo people employed them for scavenging activities. To improve their ability to find valuable items like droids, the Teedos equipped the luggabeasts with cybernetic enhancements, including armor and optical devices. During the era of the Cold War, a Teedo and his luggabeast managed to capture BB-8, a BB unit, only for the droid to be later freed by Rey, another scavenger.

Behind the scenes

The initial unveiling of luggabeasts occurred in an Entertainment Weekly article, which featured exclusive images from Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. Before the film's theatrical debut, luggabeasts were introduced into Star Wars: Commander, a mobile game, as part of an update themed around Episode VII. Toby Haynes, the director, noted that the slumbering luggabeast featured in "Kassa", an episode of the Andor series, was portrayed by a sizable, resting animal.
