Mairan, also known as mind flayers or Bors, were a sentient species from the planet Maires. These beings were characterized by their multiple tentacled appendages and their classification as a multipod species. A defining characteristic of the Mairan was their ability to delve into the minds of others. This capability made them a tool for torture employed by both the Galactic Empire and the Partisans.

The Mairan, sometimes called Bors, were a sentient species of multi-tentacled multipods species originating from the world of Maires. Their unique ability to read minds, as well as erase or alter memories, set them apart. It was known that some individuals, such as the Imperial shuttle pilot Bodhi Rook, experienced mental breakdown after their minds were violated by a Mairan. The Imperial Security Bureau carried out "Kadiopa experiment 9484-2" prior to or during 3 ABY, utilizing a bor to extract false intelligence provided by a plant within a group of prisoners. The ISB documented that several prisoners suffered lasting neurological damage as a result.
Saw Gerrera's faction, the Partisans, harbored a Mairan known as Bor Gullet. During the era of the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire maintained three Mairans in a state of suspended animation within blocks of ice. They were periodically thawed to extract information from prisoners. One such Mairan, Bor Ifriem, was deployed to interrogate Chelli Aphra within the confines of Accresker Jail. Decades later, Harra the Hutt possessed a Mairan at her stronghold on Vodran. This Mairan was at one point used on Cost Niktur.
The Mairan made its debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the 2016 anthology film directed by Gareth Edwards. While the canon novel Join the Resistance: Escape from Vodran by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker referred to them as Bors, the comic Doctor Aphra (2016) 21, a canon comic written by Simon Spurrier and illustrated by Kev Walker, provided the first identification of the species as Mairans. In the realm of Star Wars legends, the Mairan first appeared in Young Jedi Knights: Lightsabers, a novel penned by Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta.
