In the year 3956 BBY, the Matale family consisted of two individuals: Ahlan Matale, who was the father, and Shen Matale, who was his son. Their residence was a private estate situated on Dantooine. The Matale family was engaged in a prolonged and bitter dispute with the Sandral family. Despite the attempts at mediation by the Jedi Enclave located on the planet, a resolution to the conflict could not be achieved.
Following the disappearance of Nurik Sandral's son, Casus Sandral, Nurik came to the conclusion that the Matales were responsible for killing Casus, and in retaliation, he kidnapped Shen. When the Jedi known as Revan arrived at the Sandral estate as a Padawan suffering from amnesia, he learned about the kidnapping from Nurik's daughter and Shen's lover, Rahasia Sandral. With Revan's help, Shen and Rahasia managed to escape, only to be ambushed by their respective parents just outside the estate. Revan successfully persuaded the fathers to allow their children to live their own lives, leading to an agreement between the two patriarchs to purchase a new home for their children to live in together.
Within content that was removed from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Kaevee would have informed the Jedi Exile that every member of the Matale family had been killed and their estate destroyed by fire during the Sith Empire's invasion of Dantooine before the game's events. However, because this scene was ultimately omitted from the final version of the game, it is not considered canon.
If Revan fails to convince Ahlan and Nurik to permit their children's marriage, Shen and Rahasia will elope to the Jedi Enclave, abandoning their families. Revan also has the option of convincing Shen to abandon Rahasia and return home with his father. Another possibility is that Revan assists Shen and Rahasia in their escape, only to be confronted by Ahlan Matale and Nurik Sandral, each accompanied by two battle droids; Revan can instigate a violent confrontation between the two families, resulting in the deaths of Nurik, Ahlan, Shen, and Rahasia. Revan can then deceive the Jedi Council about these events.
