Mission to Nar Shaddaa (5 ABY)

During his second endeavor on Nar Shaddaa, Kyle Katarn was in pursuit of information regarding the murderer of his father, Morgan Katarn. This quest led him to 8t88, a droid information broker who professed to possess knowledge of the killer's identity. Their meeting took place within the cantina known as Rimmer's Rest. Unbeknownst to Katarn, the droid was actually in the service of Jerec, the Dark Jedi responsible for the elder Katarn's death. Supported by a contingent of hired bodyguards and bounty hunters, 8t88 had orchestrated this encounter to ensnare the younger Katarn, hoping to gain access to an encrypted holodisc discovered within the Katarn family's homestead.

Context

In the year 5 ABY, the infochant droid 8t88 was employed by Jerec, a Dark Jedi, with the task of finding the elusive Valley of the Jedi. This search led him to the deserted Katarn estate situated on Sulon, which had previously been the home of Morgan Katarn, a Rebel leader executed by Jerec in 1 BBY. 8t88 managed to salvage several holodiscs, but one remained stubbornly encrypted. To unlock it, he devised a plan to lure Katarn's son, Kyle Katarn, who was actively seeking information about his father's murderer, by arranging a rendezvous.

Upon receiving the message, Katarn eagerly anticipated meeting the information broker at Rimmer's Rest cantina located on Nar Shaddaa. Jan Ors, his partner, perceived the situation as a trap and tried to dissuade him. Katarn feigned agreement but secretly departed the Alliance headquarters alone. Ors, anticipating trouble, tracked him in the Moldy Crow, knowing that she would likely need to rescue him once again.

Meanwhile, the droid, fearing Katarn's refusal to assist in deciphering the holodisk, initially sought to enlist the services of Boba Fett, a bounty hunter, as a bodyguard, but Fett declined. Consequently, the droid settled for several other alien thugs.

The Pursuit of 8t88

As anticipated, Katarn met with the droid, who began to provide the requested information, revealing Jerec's identity—a figure Katarn had encountered during his graduation years prior. Subsequently, 8t88's hired muscle surrounded Katarn. The droid proposed a deal: Katarn's life in exchange for decoding his father's holodisc. The Rebel agent refused to cooperate, prompting 8t88 to order his execution before departing.

Kyle Katarn chasing 8t88 through the streets of Nar Shaddaa

However, Katarn had deployed a tracker droid that attached itself to 8t88. Left in the company of two thugs who confiscated his Bryar pistol and prepared to kill him, Katarn somehow managed to telekinetically pull a blaster into his hand—unknowingly performing a Force Pull—and easily defeated them. Following the tracker's signal, he pursued 8t88, battling his way through the droid's minions to the upper levels of Nar Shaddaa. Katarn reached the top just as 8t88 was about to board Furious. Katarn fired, severing the arm holding the holodisc. The limb, still clutching the disc, plummeted into the depths of Nar Shaddaa, while 8t88 escaped in his ship. Katarn exchanged fire with 8t88's guards, including Grentho. Suddenly, a TIE bomber appeared, targeting Katarn. Fortunately, Jan Ors, searching for Katarn, arrived in the Moldy Crow and destroyed the TIE bomber, saving his life.

Aerial Combat

After departing the tower and Launch Deck Three, Jan Ors, piloting the Crow, found herself pursued by two TIE/LN starfighters. Employing her exceptional piloting skills, she attempted to gain distance within the artificial "canyons," using building spires as cover while Kyle fought 8t88's minions. The TIE pilots, displaying a reckless disregard for civilian lives, fired indiscriminately among the inhabited buildings, demolishing a sky bridge and sending it crashing into the canyon below, along with its occupants. To end the dangerous chase, Jan concealed the Crow within the empty rectangular space of an unfinished spire, executing a precise landing without navigational lights.

Although the TIEs initially missed her location, one detected her engine's heat and returned. Jan shot it down, blocking her exit. As the other TIE followed, Jan flew the Crow vertically through the future turbolift shaft of the unfinished building, emerging from the top and circling down as the TIE fired. Her cannons caused the TIE to crash into the building. Jan reached a platform to await Kyle, but due to high landing fees and the arrival of other ships, she was forced to leave. For the next three hours, she returned, attempting to spot Kyle and contact him via radio, but without success.

Descent into Nar Shaddaa's Underbelly

Kyle Katarn had no alternative but to descend into the lower levels of the Smugglers' Moon to retrieve the holodisc. He and Ors agreed on a rendezvous point. He climbed down a maintenance ladder, but an Imperial patrol ship detected him with its searchlight and opened fire. Evading both the ship and a maintenance droid sent to intercept him, Katarn leaped through a broken apartment window. The ship resumed firing as he exited the apartment, devastating it. Pursued by Imperials, Katarn descended a fire escape, then through tubeways, reaching the streets and long-forgotten levels where the heat intensified.

Battling through the sewers, where 8t88 had left thugs to capture him, Katarn located 8t88's severed arm, still holding the disc, thanks to a glow rod. He was ambushed by Porg, a Trandoshan mercenary, who disarmed him. Katarn evaded his attack and grabbed the droid arm, using it to block a second blow. He temporarily incapacitated Porg when an Aqualish bounty hunter joined the fray. Kyle extinguished his glow rod and telekinetically retrieved his Bryar pistol, exchanging fire with the Aqualish, resulting in the deaths of both him and Porg.

Hearing more pursuers approaching, Kyle passed through a cemetery and reached a vertical spiraling ramp connecting the mines to the loading docks above. Following the ore for some time, he jumped to a cross brace to avoid machinery. Seeing his pursuers climbing a ladder, he walked a beam to a catwalk, which led to a maintenance platform, a freight lift, and finally, roof access. He also climbed approximately thirty stairs and a dozen ladders.

Skirmish on the Landing Platform

Kyle Katarn gets seriously injured.

He reached the top level, where he was to meet Jan Ors in the Moldy Crow. However, fifteen thugs awaited him, and a blaster bolt pierced his shoulder. Exhausted, Katarn was on the verge of giving up when a voice, belonging to the spirit of Qu Rahn, urged him to allow the Force to protect him. Suddenly, time seemed to slow, and he effortlessly shot seven of his pursuers, including a Rodian, a Gamorrean, and a human. Kyle had unknowingly used the Force power Force speed for the first time. Feeling pride and invincibility, Kyle suddenly lost focus, and a concussion grenade explosion left him slumped against the elevator as the remaining three bounty hunters approached.

Kyle didn't respond to the radio, prompting Jan to move toward the flashes of light and the explosion, activating the Crow's weapons. The bounty hunters, alerted by the approaching ship, attempted to fire, but the Crow evaded them and swung around, firing its cannon and killing them. The remaining bounty hunter feigned death as Ors exited the ship, armed with two blasters. Seeing that Kyle was alive, she dragged him aboard.

Aftermath

After three days' transit, Ors brought Katarn, his health precarious, to the hospital ship Mercy stationed with the New Hope, a New Republic Dreadnaught, in the Milagro system. While Katarn recovered in a bacta tank, Ors secretly stole the holodisk to uncover its significance. On the New Hope, with the assistance of technicians Xiong Wong and Wires, she decrypted the holodisc, playing the low-quality recording for her superiors: Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, Princess Leia Organa, and former Senator Mon Mothma. Following Skywalker's advice, she never revealed her knowledge of the holodisc's content to Katarn. Katarn and Ors then departed for the Katarn family compound on Sulon to find a method to decrypt the disc and uncover more information about Morgan Katarn's killers.
