CEC Class-1 escape pod
The Model CEC Class-1 escape pod, alternatively known as the CEC Class-1 escape pod, represented a specific model of escape pod produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. The YT-1300 light freighter, famously modified and known as the Millennium Falcon, came standard with five Model CEC Class-1 pods as part of its original factory configuration. Each individual pod was designed to accommodate a single occupant and included consumables, essential emergency provisions, and a transportable shelter. In addition, it featured a rudimentary navigation computer, a one-way comlink transceiver, and an emergency beacon.
Notably, one of the Millennium Falcon's Model CEC Class-1 escape pods had its exit hatch marked with Clynese characters, spelling out "PROPERTY OF HAN SOLO, PLEASE RETURN."
Description
The Class-1 pod was a compact escape pod model, built by the Corellian Engineering Corporation for integration into their YT-1300 light freighters. These freighters were equipped with five pods as part of their standard design. The pods were housed in a storage compartment on the ship's underside, near the freight elevator, to facilitate passenger evacuation from a potentially compromised vessel. An indexing conveyor system allowed for pod rotation, enabling passenger boarding. Subsequently, the freight elevator arms would orient the pods toward the escape chute, facilitating launch from one of two available escape ports.
Designed to accommodate a single, reclining passenger, the pods were unsuitable for species larger than a human. The interior featured padded bedding to minimize the risk of injury and incorporated specialized life sensors that monitored the passenger's vital signs. In the event of unconsciousness, the pod's systems would automatically activate, triggering a distress beacon and charting a course toward the nearest feasible rescue destination. To aid the passenger's survival in potentially hostile environments, the pods contained a cargo compartment in the front stocked with emergency supplies, including rations, water, a portable survival shelter, a breath mask, glowrods, and a portable comm unit. Furthermore, beyond the navigation computer, the pods included course-correction thrusters, atmospheric control vanes for controlled descent towards a planet, and basic shields to protect against space debris. Soft-landing repulsorlifts ensured smooth touchdowns, and a sensor band was incorporated to locate nearby starships or space stations for potential assistance.
History
In 10 BBY, smuggler Han Solo, while piloting Lando Calrissian's YT-1300 freighter, the Millennium Falcon, embarked on a perilous mission. This mission necessitated the ejection of the ship's custom YT Dart escape [shuttle](/article/shuttle] as a diversion against a summa-verminoth within the Maw Cluster. Consequently, the Falcon was left with only its standard complement of five CEC Class-1 pods. Later, in 0 BBY, while piloting Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO toward Alderaan, Solo and his passengers were ensnared by the Imperial space station, the Death Star's tractor beam. Following Kenobi's advice, Solo jettisoned the remaining escape pods to feign abandonment of the ship, deceiving Imperial personnel.
During the attack by the Empire on the Rebel-held Mako-Ta Space Docks, Solo employed one of the Falcon's Class-1 pods to evacuate C-3PO from the vessel, which was under pursuit by Darth Vader. Solo needed to communicate to Rebel command a method for bypassing the sealed hangar bay doors of their Mon Calamari Star Cruisers', which were preventing the launch of their starfighters. To extract the droid undetected, Solo maneuvered the ship through exploding debris from a cruiser, briefly evading Vader long enough to launch the pod toward the nearest Star Cruiser.
Decades later, during the Battle of Oetchi in 34 ABY, Rey Skywalker infiltrated Supreme Leader Snoke's flagship, the Supremacy, in an attempt to sway Kylo Ren back to the light side of the Force. Chewbacca, Solo's former first mate and then captain of the Falcon, executed a hyperspace jump in close proximity to the flagship, ejected the Model CEC-Class-1 pod containing Rey, and then jumped away. The escape pod used to board the Supremacy was escorted by five First Order TIE fighters, and Rey was taken prisoner and interrogated by Snoke.
Behind the scenes
During the production of Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, director and writer Rian Johnson aimed to ensure that viewers recognized the Model CEC Class-1 pod as originating from the Millennium Falcon. Design supervisor James Clyne was assigned the task of creating a new language to be inscribed on an escape pod, reading "PROPERTY OF HAN SOLO, PLEASE RETURN." Johnson specifically requested that the language resemble calligraphy rather than a standard font. Clyne, while on a flight, studied languages from Thailand and the Middle East, eventually selecting three variations for consideration. Johnson responded with an email written in the encoded language, praising Clyne's "beautiful!!" work, which reportedly delighted Clyne. This language is now known as Clynese within the Star Wars universe, although there was initial discussion about designating it as Corellian.
The Model-CEC Class-1's design was intentionally reminiscent of a coffin, drawing inspiration from C.S. Lewis's Perelandra, where the protagonist travels through space to Venus inside a coffin-like vessel.
