Biography

Magaña's Attack of the Clones landing page

Monica M. Magaña, a Canadian artist with a mixed heritage of Mexican American and Salvadoran descent, came into the world on September 26, 1992. She was chosen as one of fifteen artists to produce an artistic creation in honor of Star Wars Day on the Disney+ streaming platform. Magaña's contribution was the visual for the landing page dedicated to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, the second installment in the prequel trilogy. Like the other commissioned works, her piece was displayed from May 4 through May 9, 2021, and it was also highlighted in the StarWars.com article titled "Meet the Artists Behind Disney+'s Stunning Star Wars Day Art" by Dan Brooks.

Within that article, Magaña detailed her passion for Star Wars, recalling watching the prequel films with her father, viewing the original trilogy on VHS, and relishing the Star Tours attraction at Disneyland. She articulated that her inspiration for the artwork was to evoke a sense of "youthful awe," utilizing vibrant hues and the luminescence linked to the saga's lightsabers. Magaña's appreciation for the hand-painted posters and paintings of Drew Struzan from the original trilogy motivated her to infuse the image with a traditional media aesthetic, despite its digital creation. To accomplish this, she employed custom digital brushes that simulated the texture of real brushstrokes.

The artwork showcases the movie's title alongside a collection of characters from the film. In the forefront, we find Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, Senator Padmé Amidala, and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, with a shadowed Darth Sidious positioned behind Kenobi. Above and in the background, Jedi Council member Mace Windu is seen deflecting a blaster shot from bounty hunter Jango Fett. Sandwiched between these combatants is a brightly illuminated Boba Fett, Jango's son, clutching his father's helmet in a recreation of a scene from the movie. Radiant swirls encircle the characters against a blue backdrop. Magaña expressed that her favorite aspect of the image was Obi-Wan Kenobi. Magaña has created fan art of the Togruta Ahsoka Tano as part of a series about her favorite women in animated games and other media. Additional Star Wars characters she's illustrated in fanworks include the youngling Grogu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the droid L0-LA59, and Princess Leia Organa.
