Nebula-class Star Destroyer

The Nebula-class Star Destroyer, which also goes by the name Defender-class Star Destroyer, represented the pinnacle of warship design and power within the New Republic's New Class Modernization Program. It was the largest ship in the program.

Characteristics

Despite measuring only 1,040 meters in length (just 65% the size of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer), the Nebula-class was engineered to effectively combat an Imperial II. Its design, characterized by sharp angles, often led to misidentification as an Imperial vessel, even though its structure notably differed from the Imperial-class, particularly in the absence of a command tower. Due to its comparatively smaller dimensions, it was commonly dubbed a "pocket Star Destroyer", a nickname later applied to the Turbulent-class as well.

The design specifications demanded the capability to vanquish a single enemy Star Destroyer, a pair of heavy cruisers, or a complete line of smaller Imperial support vessels. Its defensive systems were robust enough to withstand attacks from even smaller Super Star Destroyers or comparable warships.

A Nebula-class Star Destroyer

The Nebula-class Star Destroyer's arsenal comprised 40 heavy turbolaser batteries, 40 turbolaser cannons, 20 ion cannons, 8 tractor beam projectors, 8 assault concussion missile tubes (each housing 30 missiles), and pulse cannons equivalent in size to turbolasers, providing substantial firepower. Although advertised as having significantly superior firepower compared to the Republic-class, the Nebula and Republic classes possessed nearly identical armaments, with the Nebula featuring eight concussion missile launchers and the Republic having two additional tractor beams. However, the Nebula's advanced power generation and gun models made it a superior design. Moreover, the Nebula's hull armor and shield systems surpassed those of most other ships, including the Republic.

These ships could accommodate up to sixty starfighters, typically including an assault wing composed of K-wing bombers for precision strikes and Defender starfighter for close support. Nebulas could also support a space superiority wing consisting of hyperdrive-equipped E-wings, A-wings, or upgraded X-wings. Additionally, they carried 1,600 troops and enough consumables to sustain them for five to six months, depending on the configuration.

For faster-than-light travel, Nebula-class Star Destroyers were outfitted with a Class 1 hyperdrive. The design also incorporated lateral thrust vents to enhance maneuverability, granting it greater agility than most large capital ships.

Adhering to the New Class practice of utilizing a common hull for various configurations, the Nebula-class Star Destroyers shared their fundamental spaceframe design with the Endurance-class fleet carriers.

History

The Nebula-class Star Destroyer's development phase commenced shortly after Coruscant's fall. Officially re-designated as the Defender upon its inclusion in the Defender design program, the Nebula-class refined the core aspects of Walex Blissex's Republic-class design, resulting in a more compact, angular hull. The Defender program faced setbacks due to political distractions and the operations of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the resurrected Darth Sidious, causing delays. Upon resumption, the design became part of the New Class program and contributed its hull design to the Endurance-class carrier. In 15 ABY, the Nebula-class became the last of the New Class's eight new starship designs to be commissioned. Its introduction was considered poorly timed, coinciding with what was regarded as the most peaceful year since the New Republic's establishment.

The first vessel of this class to enter service was the Obi-Wan, named in honor of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a hero of the Rebellion. The ship was under the command of Captain Whyrrryk, a female Wookiee. Due to the complexities inherent in constructing compact yet potent warships, the production of Nebula-class ships was limited. Around 17 ABY, only ten were in active service, with projections indicating the addition of one more each year until the New Class build program concluded. During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, the New Republic's scarce Nebula-class ships were strategically positioned near the Core Worlds within reserve fleets due to political considerations. Nevertheless, _Nebula_s demonstrated their effectiveness in engagements with the extra-galactic warships once they finally engaged in combat. Even with its age, the Nebula-class remained the pinnacle of modern, efficient Star Destroyer design throughout the Yuuzhan Vong War.

At least one Defender-class Star Destroyer remained operational during the era of Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire. Pol Temm maintained the ship as an integral component of his The Wheel defense fleet. In an attempt to uphold his no-weapons policy, he engaged in a space battle with a Mandalorian faction known as the Mandalorian Supremacists and was reportedly killed when his Defender was destroyed.

Behind the scenes

The official Expanded Universe lore surrounding this ship class is characterized by a convoluted and lengthy history. Michael P. Kube-McDowell, the author of the Black Fleet Crisis novels, designated the Star Destroyer counterpart to the Endurance-class carrier as the "Nebula-class." However, the RPG sourcebook Cracken's Threat Dossier referred to this ship as the Defender-class Star Destroyer and provided a complex in-universe backstory as part of a "Defender" project, encompassing the Defender-class assault carrier (another "New Class" design by Kube-McDowell) and the Defender starfighter (an older WEG ship inspired by a toy from the animated series Star Wars Droids).

The sourcebook also featured the sole official images (at the time) of the Nebula-class and Endurance-class. In contrast to the depictions of other New Class ships in the book, these two ship classes appeared to be constructed on a shared spaceframe. Consequently, they could not be easily dismissed like the other New Class ship images, although it was difficult to reconcile the Endurance-class's description as "fat-hulled" in Before the Storm.

In a subsequent RPG sourcebook, Starships of the Galaxy, the Defender-class reappeared with slightly modified statistics: the ship's consumable supply was extended from 5 to 6 months, and it now carried 60 "starfighters and shuttles" instead of the single wing mentioned previously. The Saga Edition of the same sourcebook further increased the starfighter complement to 60 starfighters and 12 "space transports." Starships of the Galaxy also presented a new image of the Defender, which was sleek, dagger-shaped, and more closely resembled other Star Destroyer designs.

The New Essential Chronology added to the confusion by asserting that the official name is the Nebula-class Star Destroyer, retroactively aligning its name with Michael P. Kube-McDowell's original designation.

2011's Invasion: Revelations 3 featured a pair of ships explicitly identified as Defender-class, utilizing the visual representation from Cracken's Threat Dossier, potentially distinguishing the Nebula and Defender as two distinct Star Destroyer classes.

2012's The Essential Guide to Warfare sought to resolve many of the ambiguities surrounding the New Class program in a section that author Jason Fry jokingly referred to as "continuity hell." It clarified that the Nebula-class was formally renamed Defender (without the use of "class" or italics) when it became part of the Defender program. This program was suspended, and when ship development resumed as part of the New Class program years later, it seemingly reverted to the original Nebula name.

It is worth noting that the Nebula-class Star Destroyer and Endurance-class fleet carrier closely mirror the scheme of the Victory-class Star Destroyer and Venator-class Star Destroyer of the Galactic Republic. In both instances, the two destroyers possess comparable power levels, but one is primarily designed for ship-to-ship combat, while the other functions as an escort carrier.
