Osmiridium, a metal of gold hue, served in the construction of both Jedi lightsabers and gyroscopic devices. On Jakku, this substance was ingested by steelpeckers and stored within their gizzards to facilitate the digestive process.

The gold metal known as osmiridium was suitable for fabricating the emitters and switches of Jedi lightsabers. It also appeared in gyroscopes and focusing arrays that had been subjected to significant heat. This metal, located on the planet Jakku, was eaten by steelpeckers, accumulating in their gizzards to aid in digestion. Within these gizzards, osmiridium, combined with vanadium and corundum, created a chemical compound that assisted in breaking down the metal food of the steelpeckers.

During 14 BBY, the Jedi Padawan named Cal Kestis came across some osmiridium on the planet Zeffo and decided to keep it to implement alterations to his former master's lightsaber.
Many years down the line, during the New Republic Era, Rey, a Jakkuvian scavenger, documented the birds called steelpeckers' fondness for the metal in her survival guide. She cautioned future scavengers exploring Jakku's Starship Graveyard to steer clear of components with high concentrations of osmiridium, in order to avoid encountering the birds.
The reference book Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo and the replica journal Rey's Survival Guide by Jason Fry, both launched on December 18, 2015 alongside the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, were the first mentions of osmiridium. Its first actual appearance was in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which was developed by Respawn Entertainment. In the game, it was one of twenty-four different materials players could gather to personalize the look of Cal Kestis' lightsaber.
