Corundum

Corundum constituted a pink metallic element utilized in the construction of lightsabers wielded by the Jedi Order, as well as being a component in gyroscopic mechanisms. On the planet of Jakku, steelpeckers ingested this material, storing it within their gizzards to facilitate their digestive processes.

Description

Steelpeckers of Jakku used corundum to aid in their digestion.

The colored metal known as Corundum, which appeared pink, served as a construction material for the emitters and switches in lightsabers used by the Jedi. Furthermore, it could be located in gyroscopic devices and focusing arrays following exposure to significant heat. This metal, found on the planet Jakku, was consumed by steelpeckers, who retained it within their gizzards to aid in their digestion. In combination with vanadium and osmiridium within their gizzards, the corundum would form a chemical compound that would assist in the breakdown of the steelpecker's metallic food.

History

Back in 14 BBY, Cal Kestis, a Padawan of the Jedi, came across a quantity of corundum on the planet Bogano. He chose to retain it for future modifications to the lightsaber of his former master.

Many years afterwards, during the Era of the New Republic, Rey, a Jakkuvian scavenger, documented the birds known as steelpeckers' fondness for the metal within her survival guide. In it, she cautioned future scavengers operating in Jakku's Starship Graveyard to steer clear of components exhibiting elevated concentrations of the metal to avoid encountering them.

Behind the scenes

Corundum was initially referenced in the reference work titled Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary by Pablo Hidalgo, as well as the replica journal Rey's Survival Guide authored by Jason Fry. Both were released on December 18, 2015, coinciding with the debut of the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. It made its initial appearance in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, developed by Respawn Entertainment. Within the game, it was featured as one of twenty-four materials available for players to collect, allowing them to personalize the aesthetic of Cal Kestis' lightsaber.
