This lightsaber was initially wielded by the Jedi Master known as Jaro Tapal. In the moments leading up to his death, Tapal bequeathed this weapon to his padawan, Cal Kestis, who then utilized it until its crystal fractured while Kestis was present on Dathomir.

During his time as a Jedi, Jaro Tapal crafted a double-bladed lightsaber. He possessed it not long before the implementation of Order 66—a directive that compelled all clone troopers to eliminate their Jedi superiors. He ignited it in an act of defense for himself and his Padawan, Cal Kestis. Despite Tapal's considerable prowess with the weapon, it proved insufficient to withstand the concentrated barrage from numerous clones while simultaneously safeguarding himself and his Padawan. Consequently, the lightsaber sustained damage when a blaster bolt split it into two pieces. Mortally wounded, Tapal entrusted Kestis with his lightsaber, aware that Kestis had lost his own. With his dying words, Tapal urged Kestis to place his faith in the Force.
Kestis retained his deceased master's saber throughout the five years he spent in hiding on Bracca, until he revealed his presence to the Second Sister and Ninth Sister after the execution of Prauf, igniting it in a futile attempt to avenge Prauf's death. He continued to employ the weapon throughout his journeys with the crew of the Mantis, effectively utilizing it against the various dangers he encountered and eventually repairing the damaged section. However, it was damaged on Dathomir when a Force vision involving his master resulted in the shattering of the saber's crystal. Preserving the remaining components of the weapon, Cal eventually integrated them, along with parts of Cere Junda's lightsaber, into the new lightsaber he constructed on Ilum.
This lightsaber made its debut appearance in the 2019 video game titled Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The lightsaber offers the option of using a blue, green, or orange crystal, with the latter two becoming accessible after the initial segment on Bracca. Additional colors become available in New Journey + mode, which also unlocks a non-canonical red crystal choice. By default and in flashback sequences, the weapon is depicted with blue blades, establishing it as its canon color. The lightsaber offers customization through various materials, sleeves, emitters, and switches.
Following a fan vote in 2020, the damaged hilt variant of the weapon was chosen as the next replica saber to be offered for sale at the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge attractions located within the Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios theme parks. Marketed under the name of Cal Kestis' lightsaber, it is the first saber originating from a video game to be made available for purchase at the parks and will be obtainable in 2021 at Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities.
