Prauf

Prauf was an Abednedo male who was employed as a starship engineer on the planet of Bracca in the time leading up to the Clone Wars, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Following the Clone Wars, Prauf joined the Scrapper Guild and developed a friendship with Cal Kestis, a young human scrapper. They worked together dismantling Venator-class Star Destroyers for the new Galactic Empire. However, in 14 BBY, Prauf was almost killed in a workplace accident, which led Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan, to use the Force to rescue him. This act inadvertently revealed Kestis' existence to the Empire's Inquisitors. When the Second Sister and Ninth Sister, two Inquisitors, arrived on Bracca and began questioning Prauf's scrapper crew, Prauf confronted the Second Sister to divert attention from Kestis, resulting in his death.

Biography

Early life and the Clone Wars

Being an Abednedo male native to the planet Abednedo, Prauf began his career as an engineer on Bracca before the outbreak of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. He became a member of the Scrapper Guild and contributed to the repair and reconstruction of damaged vessels.

During the Clone Wars, certain members of the Scrapper Guild supported the Separatists, attempting to seize control of Bracca from the Republic. In response, the newly established Galactic Empire reduced wages and relaxed safety regulations on the planet. Prauf continued his work under the Empire, but he noticed that many of his fellow engineers were being reassigned as scrappers. The Abednedo operated heavy-duty cutters and welders in order to dismantle derelict starships.

Age of the Empire

Prauf with Cal Kestis and their chief

At some point prior to 14 BBY, he formed a bond with Cal Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan living in secrecy. Prauf, unaware of his friend's true identity, assisted Kestis in securing employment through the Scrapper Guild, and they were both overseen by a foreman droid. He also believed Kestis was capable of more, encouraging him to explore the galaxy and discover his destiny, rather than remaining on Bracca as a scrapper. Both Prauf and Kestis were diligent and avoided trouble, which allowed them to remain largely unnoticed by the guild supervisors. In 14 BBY, Prauf and Kestis were tasked with securing cables on line Ten-A, a section located on the wing of a destroyed Venator-class Star Destroyer. Kestis pointed out the danger of the task, but the chief offered them double pay for doing it. While trying to reach line Ten-A, after Prauf went on it, the stairs that led to a structure collapsed, forcing Kestis to pass through another way. After securing the cables, Prauf and Kestis noticed an Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptor, and they briefly discussed the Jedi.

As they were preparing to leave the Star Destroyer, the supports that were preventing the starship from collapsing gave way, and Prauf and Kestis began to slide downwards. As they were about to fall into the Ibdis Maw, Kestis' leg became trapped in a pipe, and he used the Force to decelerate Prauf's descent. Kestis and Prauf landed on a damaged hover barge, but they managed to steer it to the ground. Prauf inquired whether Kestis had used the Force to save him, and Kestis made him promise to keep it a secret. On the train ride home from the scrapyard, Prauf expressed his gratitude to Kestis for risking his life to save him and suggested that the former Jedi leave Bracca. Kestis agreed, sharing his plan to seek refuge on the moon Nar Shaddaa, and informed Prauf that he would not be seeing him for some time before falling asleep exhausted.

Death and legacy

Prauf was killed by the Second Sister.

However, without their knowledge, an Imperial probe droid witnessed the event and contacted the Inquisitorius. The Second Sister and the Ninth Sister, two Imperial Inquisitors, were dispatched to Bracca along with a squad of Purge Troopers to eliminate the Force-sensitive individual working as a scrapper. The train carrying the workers was stopped by several stormtroopers, and the scrappers were lined up. The Inquisitors, unsure of which one possessed Force abilities, asked the scrappers to voluntarily identify themselves, or else everyone would face summary execution. Prauf, in an attempt to create a diversion, began to complain about the Empire's treatment of Bracca and the Scrapper Guild. The Second Sister agreed with him, before killing Prauf with her lightsaber. Enraged, Kestis attempted to attack the Second Sister with his lightsaber. However, his attack was blocked by the Inquisitor, forcing Kestis to flee.

Prauf's demise prompted Kestis to escape from Bracca, fulfilling Prauf's desire for him to leave the planet. Kestis later recounted to Nightsister Merrin how an old friend had encouraged him to find his place in the galaxy and realize his destiny.

Personality and traits

Prauf was a cheerful and loquacious Abednedo male with light brown skin. He had fond memories of a time when the shipyards of Bracca were focused on repairing ships rather than dismantling them. Prauf was proficient in operating cutters and welders due to his physical strength and imposing stature. He was a skilled engineer with the ability to climb, jump, and, with Kestis' assistance, secure cables.
