Stinger Mantis

The Stinger Mantis, often shortened to just the Mantis, was a luxury yacht of the S-161 "Stinger" XL model, piloted and owned by Greez Dritus. During 14 BBY, Dritus utilized this vessel to transport Cal Kestis and the former Jedi Cere Junda, aiding their secret mission to rebuild the Jedi Order. The pilot boasted of the Mantis's resilience, claiming its ability to withstand nearly any environment. However, by 9 BBY, the Mantis had suffered some internal damage upon landing on the planet Koboh.

Description

The exterior of the ship was composed of three distinct sections. A rotating segment, which housed the large vertical fin and the primary outrigger engine, separated the front and rear portions. The interior consisted of six distinct areas: the cockpit, the holotable room, the galley, the common area, the main corridor, and the engine room. Despite being lightly armed, the ship featured two laser cannons positioned above the main cockpit.

The cockpit featured a floor partially constructed of glass, which, combined with elevated seating, provided the pilot with a broad view. Two seats served as the pilot and co-pilot stations, while a third seat to the right functioned as the comm station.

A holotable room was situated behind the cockpit. A semi-circular sofa, upholstered in Potolli-weave fabric, encircled the table positioned in the center of the room. Behind the sofa were the two boarding ramps, located on either side of the ship, depending on its landing orientation.

Farther back, in the common area, was a sizable seating area. Decorative terrariums, situated behind a wall of Umbaran glass, surrounded the seating arrangements. Adjacent to this was a staircase leading to an elevated galley. The galley contained a table next to shelves filled with food storage, as well as another large terrarium. The main corridor, accessible through an opening in the back, featured three doors, each leading to different rooms within the ship.

The engine room was located beyond the main corridor. It consisted of two levels connected by a ladder on the left side. The upper level included a workbench, diagnostic controls, railings, and the sleeping quarters of Cal Kestis. The hyperdrive was located behind the workbench. The lower level, accessible via the ladder, housed two escape pods and a dimly lit corridor.

History

Dritus acquired the Mantis sometime before 14 BBY, financing the purchase with a substantial loan. He then used the ship to travel across the galaxy to Coruscant and participate in gambling events, eventually accumulating significant debt with the Haxion Brood.

In 14 BBY, former Jedi Knight Cere Junda hired Dritus and the Mantis to aid her in her objective of rebuilding the Jedi Order. During the negotiation of his services, Dritus described the Mantis as a beautiful and masterful machine, claiming it was the best luxury cruiser in that region of the galaxy, an assertion Junda quickly discovered to be untrue. Together, they journeyed to various locations, including Nar Shaddaa and Todola, searching for surviving Jedi after the Great Jedi Purge in 19 BBY.

Junda tries to help Kestis board the Mantis while he escapes from the Inquisitors on Bracca.

Later in 14 BBY, Dritus and Junda rescued Cal Kestis, a former Jedi Padawan, from the junkyard planet of Bracca. With Kestis joining them, the Mantis now had a full crew, and they embarked on a quest to recover a holocron from Eno Cordova containing the locations of Force-sensitive children. Their search for clues led them to Bogano, Zeffo, Kashyyyk, Dathomir, Ilum, and the Fortress Inquisitorius on Nur.

Unnoticed by Imperial Star Destroyers, the Mantis approaches Kashyyyk.

After retrieving the holocron and deciding to destroy it, the Mantis became the home for the crew, which expanded with the additions of BD-1 and Nightsister Merrin. They continued their crusade against the Empire and the Haxion Brood. Between 12 BBY and 11 BBY, they undertook various jobs and missions on Hosnian Prime, Murkhana, Zimara, and Mazah, and infiltrated a Haxion Brood base.

Between 11 BBY and 9 BBY, Kestis assumed control of the ship after the Mantis crew went their separate ways following the Mission to Murkhana. He continued to use the ship in his fight against the Empire, often piloting it into dangerous situations, including the mission on Coruscant in 9 BBY, alongside a crew that included Bode Akuna, Gabs, Bravo, and the Klatooinians Lizz and Koob. During the mission on Coruscant, Gabs expressed interest in owning the Mantis, asking Kestis if she could keep it if he died. However, Kestis explained that this was not possible because, although he was using the Mantis, it did not belong to him.

Damaged after the mission on Coruscant, the Stinger Mantis approaches Koboh.

After escaping from Coruscant, Kestis traveled to Koboh to reunite with Dritus and ensure that the Mantis received the best possible repairs and maintenance. Dritus later regained captaincy of the ship, and the Mantis crew reunited to travel to Jedha, Koboh's Shattered Moon, and Nova Garon with the goal of finding the hidden world of Tanalorr, which they eventually accomplished.

Upgrades and Amendments

By 9 BBY, the terrarium had been repurposed into a display case showcasing various items collected during the crew's travels. These included a scrapper headset given to Cal by Prauf, Eno Cordova’s toolkit from his time on Bogano, a feather from the Shyyyo bird encountered on Kashyyyk, Greez’s salt shaker, and the destroyed holocron recovered from Nur. However, a small section of the ship was still dedicated to plant life.

In 9 BBY, Dritus considered replacing the cabin couch cushions. However, when Kestis mentioned that the damaged seats reminded him of Lizz, who used to bounce on the couch with great enthusiasm before missions to pump herself up, Dritus reconsidered and decided to leave them as they were.

Behind the scenes

The Stinger Mantis made its debut in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, developed by Respawn Entertainment. The ship's cockpit was designed to create a sense of immersion, making the characters feel surrounded by the environments they were visiting, hence the panoramic windows. Inspiration was drawn from old submarines and elements from A New Hope to evoke a feeling of heavy machinery and claustrophobic conditions. Jean-Francois Rey, Wesley Griffith, and Prog Wang created the concept art for the Stinger Mantis. Doug Chiang and Ryan Church of the Lucasfilm Art Department provided design support for the Mantis.
