In the year 9 BBY, the Jedi Knight known as Cal Kestis made his way back to the Shattered Moon. His objective: locating Rayvis, the leader of the Bedlam Raiders. Kestis had previously overheard Dagan Gera, a fallen Jedi from the High Republic Era, instructing Rayvis, during a rescue mission, to seek out an Abyss compass at the High Republic installation on the Shattered Moon. Gera intended to utilize this compass to find Tanalorr, a planet concealed within the Koboh Abyss. Kestis's aim was to prevent Rayvis and Gera from reaching Tanalorr, with the ultimate goal of securing this hidden planet as a sanctuary for Force-sensitives and groups like the Hidden Path, shielding them from the reach of the Galactic Empire. Upon his arrival on the moon, Kestis observed Rayvis's vessel heading towards the facility's tower, prompting him to give chase.
To reach the tower, Kestis traversed the moon's array, engaging in combat with numerous Bedlam Raiders and battle droids. Throughout his journey, Rayvis mocked him through the array's communication system. Within the facility's laboratory, Kestis experienced a Force vision depicting Gera's arm being severed by his comrade, Jedi Master Santari Khri, who believed Gera had strayed onto a dark path. Before the vision concluded, Khri instructed a droid to prepare a bacta tank for Gera. Subsequently, Kestis acquired High Republic technology to enhance his ascension cable, thereby facilitating his navigation through the laboratory. Kestis then confronted Rayvis in the control tower situated atop the facility's laboratory. After Rayvis refused to disclose the compass's location, a duel ensued, culminating in Rayvis's exhaustion and surrender. Kestis attempted to enlist the Gen'Dai to his cause, but Rayvis, weary of servitude, requested a warrior's death from Kestis, a request denied by the Jedi of old, which Kestis then granted.
Having gleaned from Rayvis that the Abyss compass was actually located within Khri's Koboh Observatory, which Rayvis had activated and unlocked for Gera by activating the Shattered Moon's array, Kestis started his journey back to the landing platform and his starship, the Stinger Mantis. During his return, Kestis began to fear he was mirroring Gera, forsaking the Jedi Code in his pursuit of Tanalorr. He voiced these concerns to his friend, the Nightsister Merrin, as he made his way back to Koboh, and she reassured him that she and their other companions would ensure he did not lose himself.
