In the year 9 BBY, Cal Kestis, a Jedi Knight, and Bode Akuna, a gunslinger, embarked on a mission. Their objective was to rescue the High Republic Era droid ZN-A4 from the clutches of the Bedlam Raiders. This took place at the wreckage of the _Lucrehulk_-class LH-3210 cargo freighter Primacy, located in the Viscid Bog on the planet Koboh. During this endeavor, Kestis encountered Rayvis and Dagan Gera, the leaders of the raiders. These individuals seized the frequencies from Kestis's Republic tuner device. Following a dueling encounter with Gera, the fallen Jedi made his escape. Ultimately, Kestis and Akuna successfully rescued ZN-A4 and departed.
Following their return from a mission on the moon Jedha in 9 BBY, Kestis, Akuna, along with the Nightsister Merrin, were informed by Turgle and Mosey Cimmaron, Koboh natives, that ZN-A4 had been abducted by the raiders. Kestis and Akuna then made the decision to rescue her from the Primacy, while Merrin remained to safeguard Rambler's Reach Outpost. Kestis and Akuna had a suspicion that the Jedi Dagan Gera, now fallen and aligned with the raiders, had orchestrated the droid's capture. They believed he sought information about the planet Tanalorr still contained within her databanks.
Upon their arrival at the crash site, Kestis and Akuna opted to enter via the ship's gantry, requiring Kestis to navigate the swampy terrain to reach it. Once inside, they confronted numerous battle droids and raiders before spotting ZN-A4 inside a turbolift at the ship's core. Akuna created a diversion by detonating Armored Assault Tanks, but Kestis was unable to find a direct route to the turbolift. Continuing their search for an alternate path, Akuna and Kestis pressed onward, engaging in a discussion about Kestis's burgeoning relationship with Merrin.
While Kestis worked on a console they discovered within the vessel, Akuna encouraged him to embrace his feelings and pursue a relationship with Merrin. After a laser gate separated him from Akuna, Kestis proceeded to explore the ship, eventually encountering Rayvis, the Gen'Dai leader of the Bedlam Raiders. Rayvis seized Kestis's Republic tuner device and attempted to eliminate the Jedi. Kestis managed a temporary escape by severing Rayvis's arm, but the Gen'Dai reattached it and resumed the pursuit. This time, Kestis's droid BD-1 caused a large crate to fall onto Rayvis before he could attack. The impact inadvertently sent Kestis tumbling down a long shaft, his lightsaber scraping against the wall to slow his descent.
Following a flashback regarding his time with Cere Junda, his Jedi Master, where she utilized the Force to manipulate an elevator, Kestis drew inspiration to replicate the feat. He brought down turrets on the ceiling that were attacking him and opened gates. Concerned that the stolen tuner would grant the raiders and Gera access to the work of Santari Khri, a High Republic Jedi Master, and aid them in locating Tanalorr, Kestis became determined to retrieve the device. After further exploration of the ship, Kestis finally arrived at the central area where he had previously observed ZN-A4 from a distance. He overheard a conversation between Gera and Rayvis, during which Rayvis revealed that he had already duplicated the tuner's codes and frequencies. Gera then dispatched Rayvis to the Shattered Moon to acquire the final Abyss compass, which would enable them to reach Tanalorr. Rayvis informed Gera that upon completion of this task, he would deem his oath to him fulfilled. Kestis also learned that Gera intended to reprogram ZN-A4 to serve his own purposes.
After more searching, Kestis located ZN-A4 suspended in restraints nearby. However, as he freed her, Gera appeared. Kestis implored Gera to relinquish his fixations from the past, but Gera responded by slashing at ZN-A4 with his lightsaber. Kestis intercepted the blow and engaged Gera in combat. Kestis then used the Force to reclaim the tuner from Gera, but the fallen Jedi used the Force to hurl Kestis and ZN-A4 through a window. Gera followed Kestis to the landing site, where they resumed their lightsaber duel. Eventually, Gera gained an advantage by forcing Kestis to support a large crate to prevent it from crushing him. However, Akuna arrived and briefly battled Gera until Kestis could free himself from the object. After damaging the platform they were on, Gera fled.
Akuna used his jetpack to prevent Kestis from falling off the platform, bringing him to safety. He then offered to use the jetpack to free ZN-A4, who had become suspended in tubes after being thrown out the window. As they made their escape, they decided to travel to the Shattered Moon to prevent Rayvis from obtaining the last Abyss compass. They then utilized escape pods to flee the ship, bringing ZN-A4 with them.
