Kata Akuna

Kata Akuna was a female human, the offspring of Bode and Tayala Akuna.

Biography

Kata lost her mother when she was very young, an event that changed her life greatly.

They enjoyed a peaceful existence on Birren, a world situated in the Inner Rim. One fateful day, while Kata was with Bode, they received an urgent communication from Tayala, instructing them to escape with Kata immediately because the Inquisitorius had discovered their location. Bode then transported Kata to the Nova Garon system and negotiated an agreement with Lank Denvik, an ISB commander and his former superior from his time in Republic Intelligence. To protect Kata from the Inquisitorius, Bode was to act as an agent for Denvik. One such mission involved Bode gaining the confidence of Jedi Knight Cal Kestis to infiltrate the anti-Imperial activities led by Saw Gerrera. During his time with Kestis, Bode became aware of a concealed planet named Tanalorr, which the Empire was unaware of because the Koboh Abyss obscured it.

While her father was in the service of Commander Denvik, Kata stayed in the officer's living spaces on the ISB station, spending much of her time alone with her doll, Mookie. In short order, she grew to despise the base where she was living.

Ultimately, Bode betrayed Kestis, absconding with a compass that served as the final key to traversing the Koboh Abyss and reaching Tanalorr. With Kestis in pursuit, Bode returned to Nova Garon to retrieve Kata. As her father set in motion a plan to betray Denvik to the Inquisitorius and eliminate any trace of himself or Kata, the girl encountered Kestis, who had infiltrated the base. Kestis attempted to gain the child's trust by assisting Kata in locating Mookie, who had gone missing in the living quarters. Bode managed to stall Kestis, providing himself and Kata with the time needed to flee the ISB station.

Upon arriving on Tanalorr, Kata quickly came to dislike the planet, finding it to be dark and desolate. Kestis and his crewmate Merrin made their way to the planet, where they discovered Kata sitting alone and singing the lullaby Ghost Star outside of the planet's Jedi Temple. The pair informed her that her father had stolen something of importance and that they were there to recover it from him. Kata attempted to persuade her father to yield and allow others pursued by the Empire to seek sanctuary on Tanalorr, but he was so overwhelmed by his rage and fear that he used the Force pushed on Kata, injuring her. Kestis and Merrin engaged Bode in combat for control of the planet, offering him opportunities to surrender, which he vehemently refused. After her father was killed by Cal, Kata became a member of the Mantis crew. Kata observed a traditional Jedi funeral on Tanalorr to mourn her father's passing, placing Mookie on the pyre to be consumed by the flames.

Later, after settling on Koboh, Kata developed an interest in gardening, particularly pruning, under the tutelage of Pili Walde and with the encouragement of Greez Dritus. While on the planet, Greez also pledged to teach her how to cook, commenting that she eats like a starving rancor. Dritus told her that he would make Greasy Greez-loaf for her and, if she did not like his dish, joked that he would gift her the Mantis.

Kata took an immediate liking to Koboh as it was much different from where she used to live. She thought it to be far more colorful of a planet and the air smelt much nicer also. When the Mantis travelled to Coruscant, she took the opportunity to absorb the lights and city sounds of the planet as she had never seen a city as big before. While travelling with the crew, she realized the galaxy seemed bigger and scarier to her than it had done before.

Personality and traits

Kata watches her father's body burn during his funeral, shortly before placing her doll, a gift from her mother, to burn with it.

Despite the difficult circumstances of her early life, Kata possessed a caring and trusting nature. She deeply missed her mother and held affection for her father, even with his frequent absences. She enjoyed Trandoshan funk and her favorite foods were Mygeeto casserole and blue puff cubes.

After joining the Mantis crew, she quickly adapted to her new life and family. Inspired by Pili's guidance, she decided she wanted to be a botanist when she grew up, but she also considered becoming a pilot or chef due to Dritus's influence. She was not afraid of Merrin and asked the Nightsister to teach her how to dance, and also how to fight in case she was alone. Merrin agreed and joked that Kata must then teach Dritus what she learned. She found Merrin and Dritus's bickering humorous but always knew they were good friends. Kata also picked up on Merrin's fondness for Kestis.
