Overbridge (Death Star II)

The Overbridge, also referred to as the command station, served as the Galactic Empire's second Death Star's bridge and primary command center. Similar to its predecessor aboard the first Death Star, the Overbridge housed the necessary controls to remotely activate the superlaser and manage the battle station's deflector shield.

Description

Positioned along the equatorial trench on the second Death Star, the Overbridge was situated adjacent to a small hangar. Staffed by Death Star Troopers, it contained a series of computer terminals and an "Tulip" style Imperial work station, which served as the final control point in the superlaser firing sequence. After Imperial weapons technicians prepared the superlaser for firing, a beeping sound would signal its readiness. Upon receiving orders from the overseeing officer in the Overbridge, the trooper at the work station would activate the final control to initiate the shot. The room also included a turbolift, an exit to a nearby hallway, and a viewport providing a view of the hangar below. Furthermore, a small targeting screen was mounted on the wall behind the duty post, above two A280 blaster rifles.

History

Death Star Troopers inside the Overbridge.

In the year 4 ABY, Lieutenant Endicott and a contingent of Death Star Troopers were stationed within the Overbridge. The pilot operating Darth Vader's shuttle contacted the Overbridge, requesting the lowering of the Death Star's deflector shield to allow docking in one of the hangars. Upon verifying the shuttle's code transmission, Death Star Trooper Jad Bean disengaged the deflector shield, granting the shuttle safe passage. Shortly thereafter, Endicott instructed Bean to notify the station's commander, Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod, about Vader's shuttle's arrival.

Subsequently, Jerjerrod, Endicott, and other personnel occupied the Overbridge during the Battle of Endor. Following direct orders from Emperor Palpatine, Jerjerrod authorized Imperial gunners to target Rebel ships, with Bean initiating the superlaser's firing sequence at will. The superlaser commenced firing, obliterating the Liberty and the Nautilian. The Imperials were compelled to cease firing when the Rebel fleet, reacting to the superlaser, engaged the Imperial fleet at point blank range, thereby limiting the Death Star's capacity to destroy Rebel ships without risking damage to their own. Later, contact was made with the Endor shield generator bunker, where they were informed that the garrison on the moon had engaged the Rebels attempting to disable the shield generator, pushing them back into the forest. Unbeknownst to them, the Imperials in the bunker were being deceived by the Rebels to gain access through the blast doors. The Overbridge also attempted to communicate with the throne room but received no response. Both sets of information were relayed to the Vigilance.

Ultimately, the Rebels targeted the Death Star's main reactor, triggering an explosion that annihilated the entire space station, including the Overbridge. Jerjerrod and Endicott perished, while Bean had previously abandoned his post and survived.
