Persis IX

Persis IX, a planet located in the Expansion Region, served as the homeworld for the Grindalid species, a sentient race of worm-like beings. The Grindalids possessed heightened sensitivity to light due to the thick atmosphere that enveloped their world, effectively blocking most of the sunlight.

Description

Referred to also as simply Persis, Persis IX was a world found within both the Expansion Region and the Trailing Sectors. Its specific location was grid square L-15 on the Standard Galactic Grid. Orbiting its star system as the ninth orbital body, Persis IX was a dim, cloud-covered planet, its dense [atmosphere](/article/atmosphere] acting as a filter that diminished much of the incoming light.

History

An entry in an artist's journal, focusing on the native Grindalid species of Persis IX, made mention of the planet. This journal was later restored, its contents expanded, and put on display at the Graf Archive sometime after 34 ABY. The entry about the Grindalids was placed alongside descriptions of other species from humid environments. Around the same time, the book Galactic Explorer's Guide, authored by the pirate Hondo Ohnaka along with his protocol droid, DK-RA-43, also referenced Persis IX.

Inhabitants

The sentient, worm-like Grindalid species called Persis IX their homeworld, having evolved to thrive underwater. Their eyes were acutely sensitive to light, and direct sunlight caused their skin to burn.

Behind the scenes

The 2018 reference book Solo: A Star Wars Story The Official Guide, penned by Pablo Hidalgo, first alluded to the Grindalids' homeworld. The 2019 book Star Wars: The Galactic Explorer's Guide by Jason Fry first identified it as Persis IX. A shortened form of the name, Persis, was then used on a map for Star Wars: Timelines and distributed as a promotional poster at Celebration Anaheim on May 27, 2022, before the book's debut during Celebration Europe from April 7 through 10, 2023.
