Sarn

Sarn, a Human male admiral within the Imperial Navy, held command of the Super Star Destroyer named Terror circa 3 ABY. Grand Admiral Martio Batch appropriated the Terror to provide security for the Galactic Empire's development of the cloaked starfighter known as the TIE Phantom. Sarn anticipated that this project would assist him in gaining favor with Emperor Palpatine. During an inspection carried out by Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, two Rebel operatives, Rookie One and Ru Murleen, infiltrated the Terror. They proceeded to destroy both the vessel and the TIE Phantom production facility situated on Imdaar Alpha. Vader managed to escape the Terror, but before his departure, he executed Sarn for his failings.

Biography

TIE Phantom project

Sarn reports to Darth Vader.

During Emperor Palpatine's rule, Sarn, a Human male, functioned as an officer within the Imperial Navy. By the year 3 ABY, Sarn had attained the rank of admiral and was in command of the Super Star Destroyer called the Terror. Grand Admiral Martio Batch was engaged in the development of a functional cloaking device at his research station on the moon of Imdaar Alpha. These devices, once commonplace due to the stygium crystals mined from Aeten II in the Dreighton Nebula, had become scarce after the mines were depleted. Following a failed attempt to create cloaking devices using hibridium, Batch employed the Empire's Tarkin superweapon to destroy Aeten II, an act that released thousands of stygium crystals into space. The Grand Admiral then utilized this new stygium supply to initiate the production of cloaked starfighters, specifically modified V38 assault fighters that were designated as TIE Phantoms. To safeguard this project, he arranged for Sarn and the Terror to be stationed at Imdaar Alpha. Sarn viewed his involvement in this project as an opportunity to gain the favor of the Emperor.

After the Imperial forces triumphed over the Alliance to Restore the Republic at the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, the Empire initiated testing of the novel TIE Phantoms within the Dreighton Triangle, a region of space. They used reports of unexplained occurrences in the region since the Battle of Dreighton during the Clone Wars as a cover for their operations. When Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, journeyed to Imdaar Alpha to assess the project's advancement, Sarn organized a demonstration of the new fighters. He deployed Sigma Squadron to intercept a flight group of Rebel X-wings patrolling the Dreighton Triangle and instructed his crew to ensure the demonstration proceeded perfectly. Observing from aboard the Terror, Sarn was impressed by the fighters' performance, as they destroyed all three Rebel ships before they could react. However, Vader was eager to conclude the testing phase and deploy the TIE Phantoms against the Rebel Alliance.

Death and legacy

Sarn is executed by Darth Vader.

Vader remained on the Terror while the field tests concluded. Sarn informed him that the TIE Phantom fleet was prepared for full deployment. He then received orders to return the Terror to Imdaar Alpha. Upon learning that the Terror was heading towards Imdaar, the Rebel Alliance dispatched pilots Ru Murleen and Rookie One to infiltrate the Star Destroyer and acquire a TIE Phantom for study. After infiltrating the supply platform on the planet, the Rebel agents commandeered a Lambda-class supply shuttle and used it to board the Terror as the ship prepared to dock with the cloaked TIE Phantom factory. Although the intruders were soon detected, they successfully avoided capture. On Vader's orders, Sarn doubled the search patrols in an attempt to locate the Rebels, but the interlopers managed to reach the hangar and board a TIE Phantom. The Rebels then used their stolen fighter to attack the Terror's main reactor, causing it to overload, before making their escape. Sarn's crew tried unsuccessfully to prevent the reactor from reaching critical mass, while Vader instructed Sarn to detach the Terror from the TIE Phantom factory. When Sarn reported that the docking controls were malfunctioning, the Sith Lord executed him for his failure, using the Force to telekinetically strangle the admiral.

Vader escaped the Terror just before its destruction. As the Star Destroyer exploded, it revealed the location of the TIE Phantom factory. The Rebels flew their stolen fighter inside and destroyed the facility, effectively ending the TIE Phantom project. Realizing he had failed the Emperor, Grand Admiral Batch gathered his fleet and fled to the Outer Rim Territories. However, his crew remained loyal to Sarn. Following the Emperor's death at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Batch's crew assassinated the Grand Admiral and joined Warlord Blitzer Harrsk's splinter faction in the Deep Core.

Personality and traits

Sarn was a self-important and ambitious officer who believed that his involvement with the TIE Phantom project would provide him the chance to gain Emperor Palpatine's favor. He viewed Darth Vader's Force powers as enigmatic. Because he feared Vader's abilities, Sarn took care to avoid angering the Dark Lord. When Vader was dispatched to inspect the project's progress, Sarn was determined to ensure a flawless demonstration. Despite Sarn's best efforts, the project was ultimately sabotaged by Rebel agents, and Vader employed his powers to execute the admiral.

Behind the scenes

Vincent Lee created Admiral Sarn for the 1995 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire. The game's narrative was presented through a sequence of live-action cutscenes, with Gary Martinez portraying Sarn. A concise description of the character was featured on the LucasArts website as part of the game's promotional materials. Rob Smith's Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts contains an excerpt from Lee's storyboards and scripts document for Rebel Assault II, dated November 16, 1994, depicting Sarn in an early version of the game's opening scene.

Sarn received a mention in Grand Admiral Batch's entry within Abel G. Peña and Daniel Wallace's Star Wars Insider 66 article, "Who's Who: Imperial Grand Admirals." Originally intended for publication in Star Wars Gamer, the article faced cancellation of the magazine, leading to the removal of some content when it was later published by Star Wars Insider. The original manuscript, titled "Dirty Dozen: The Imperial Grand Admirals," established Sarn as a former protégé of then-admiral Harrsk and indicated that the Terror was part of a task force requisitioned by Batch to protect the Imdaar Alpha facility. Admiral Sarn was among the random names utilized by computer-controlled Imperial players in the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds.
