He, alongside his wife, established a life in Kalikori village located on the planet of Tython. Tragedy struck in 3643 BBY when, during a conflict with the native Flesh Raiders of Tython, Saylew's wife met her death in an attack upon the village. Consumed by rage, Saylew sought retribution from the Jedi Order for their perceived lack of assistance to the villagers. His fury led him to an act of betrayal, siding with the Flesh Raiders' leader, the Dark Jedi known as Bengel Morr, against the Jedi. This treachery, however, proved futile, as Morr ultimately faced defeat.
Saylew, a male Twi'lek, entered into marriage with a female of the same species. Both he and his wife were devout members of the Pilgrims during the Cold War, the period of unease separating the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. With their fellow Pilgrims, they established a settlement on the planet Tython, constructing Kalikori village despite the Galactic Senate's denial of settlement rights. Their existence was a struggle, constantly threatened by the hostile native Flesh Raiders without the support of the Jedi Order. The conflict with the Flesh Raiders escalated in 3643 BBY, prompting the Jedi to finally intervene and aid the villagers against the threat. However, during an attack on the village, Saylew's wife was killed by the Flesh Raiders, plunging Saylew into a state of intense grief and rage.
He disrupted a meeting involving Scout Chief Moorint, Ranna Tao'Ven (daughter of the village matriarch), and Jedi Master Orgus Din, demanding justice for his wife's death and vengeance against those responsible. Din advised Saylew to temper his vengeful feelings, which only fueled Saylew's anger. Their exchange was interrupted by the arrival of Din's Padawan, who had just recovered a stash of Flesh Raider weaponry. Still consumed by fury, Saylew abruptly left the building.
Shortly thereafter, the Dark Jedi Bengel Morr, the mastermind behind uniting the Flesh Raiders into an army, presented the villagers with a proposition: in exchange for assisting him in capturing his former Master, Orgus Din, he would spare Kalikori from further attacks. The villagers agreed, sending a fabricated distress signal to lure Din back to the village. There, Morr's Flesh Raiders ambushed and captured the Jedi Master. However, Morr later contacted the village again, altering the agreement and demanding the life of Din's Padawan as well. Along with Moorint and a villager named Eseni, Saylew made his way to the matriarch's building, where the recently arrived Padawan was in conversation with Tao'Ven and the astromech droid T7-O1.
As the Jedi spoke, Moorint fired a dart at the Padawan, coated in a sedative and painkiller, while Saylew targeted T7-O1 with an ion blaster. Tao'Ven, however, was incensed by their actions and rushed to the Jedi's defense, arguing vehemently with the villagers and refusing to allow them to kill the Padawan as the Jedi struggled to maintain consciousness. The Padawan quickly recovered and questioned the villagers' motives. Moorint explained that Morr was demanding the Jedi's life. Before the villagers could launch an attack, the Padawan used the Force to persuade the trio to peacefully leave the building. Despite their failure to meet Morr's demands, the villagers were spared from his wrath when Din's apprentice defeated the Dark Jedi and rescued Din.
Saylew, a Twi'lek belonging to the Rutian sub-species, possessed blue skin and green eyes. He harbored a deep love for his wife, a love that transformed into a burning hatred for the Flesh Raiders after her death. Saylew demonstrated a willingness to betray and even kill the Jedi in an attempt to protect himself and his village. His mind proved susceptible to manipulation, making him vulnerable to mind tricks.
Saylew's initial appearance was in the "High-Tech Savages" mission for the Jedi Knight class in Star Wars: The Old Republic, a video game developed by BioWare and released in 2011. He reappears in the "Dark Temptations" mission, where the player faces a choice: killing the villagers for dark-side points, failing to convince them to leave for light-side points, or using Force persuasion to make them leave, earning maximum light-side points. Given that the Jedi Knight is a Republic character and therefore assumed to make choices that maximize light-side points, this article assumes Saylew survived.
