Biography

Aide to the Chancellor

During Finis Valorum's tenure as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and its Galactic Senate, Sei Taria, a human, held the position of Chief Administratie Aide within the Office of the Chancellor. In 32 BBY, following the Trade Federation's invasion of the planet Naboo, Valorum convened a special Senate session. This allowed Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo to address the Senate and speak on behalf of her people. During this session, Taria was seated to Valorum's left at the Chancellor's podium, located in the center of the Galactic Senate Building on Coruscant, the Republic's capital.

When Senator Sheev Palpatine of Naboo began his address to the Senate, accusing the Trade Federation of invasion, Lott Dod, the Federation's Senator, quickly objected. At that point, Taria and Mas Amedda, the Vice Chair of the Senate, rose from their seats next to Valorum as the Supreme Chancellor silenced Dod, allowing Palpatine to continue. Amidala then reiterated the accusation, but Dod again interrupted with objections, demanding a commission be sent to Naboo to verify the truth, a proposal supported by Senator Aks Moe of Malastare.

Aide No Moore

Valorum started to respond, but Amedda whispered something in his ear while Taria watched. Valorum then looked at the aide, who nodded. Following this, the Supreme Chancellor asked Amidala if she would wait until the commission was appointed. Amidala declined and instead called for a Vote of No Confidence in Valorum, which caused an uproar in the Senate. Taria and a disheartened Valorum then sat down as Amedda called for order.

The vote resulted in Valorum's removal from office, and Palpatine was soon elected as his successor. Taria's position was also lost when Valorum was ousted, and she was replaced by Sly Moore, who was an Umbaran, despite her efforts to work for Palpatine. Rumors circulated that Moore had blackmailed Taria, a dedicated and committed individual, to persuade her to relinquish her position.

Behind the scenes

Unreleased photos of Sei Taria are available on Kamay Lau's website.

Kamay Lau, a British actress, portrayed Taria in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which came out in 1999 and was the first film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Lau's scene was filmed at Leavesden Studios in England, using a bluescreen. On starnow, a talent directory website, Lau's profile refers to Taria as the "Assistant to the Chancellor of the Universe" and features two promotional photos of the character that have never been officially released in any Star Wars media.

Although Sei Taria was not named in either the script for Episode I or the film's credits, David West Reynolds identified her in his Star Wars Legends reference book, Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary, published in 1999. Later, in 2016, Pablo Hidalgo identified her in canon in his reference book Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded.
