Sketto
Skettos, sometimes called cave skettos, were non-sentient, savage flying pests that constituted a species native to the desert planet Tatooine. These creatures could reach sizes of up to a meter in length, and were characterized by four strong legs, a grasping tail, four wings, a mouth filled with sharp fangs, and eyes adapted for excellent vision in the dark. They would avoid the intense heat of Tatooine's twin suns during the day, and then emerge in large numbers at night to feed by preying on smaller flying creatures and consuming the blood of larger animals while they slept. Although sketto meat was poisonous to humans in its raw state, it could be cooked and turned into meatballs as an ingredient in Sketto Chuga, a popular street food item on Tatooine.
A group of skettos made their home in Tatooine's Laguna Caves in 32 BBY. During the Boonta Eve Classic podrace, these creatures were driven from one of the cave's exits when the podracer Ratts Tyerell crashed his podracer into a stone pillar, causing an explosion.
Sometime around 34 ABY, Dok-Ondar possessed a stuffed sketto, acquired from a bounty hunter, at his store on Batuu.
Behind the scenes
The first appearance of skettos was in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, a film released in 1999 as part of the prequel trilogy. The reference book Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary, New Edition, published by DK Publishing on September 18, 2018, provided the first identification of skettos within the current canon.
