Lothal Spicebrew
Lothal Spicebrew, also known by the shorter names spicebrew or spice brew, was a tan-colored, foam-topped alcoholic beverage that was served at Old Jho's Pit Stop, a cantina located in the Jhothal outpost on the planet of Lothal. This drink was the signature beverage of the bar's owner, Jho, and it contributed to the Ithorian's renowned reputation. On the fifteenth annual Empire Day, which celebrated the founding of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, a Rodian named Tsoklo consumed a serving of spicebrew. Furthermore, in 3 ABY, the bounty hunter Dengar made a metaphorical reference to spicebrew.
Following his execution by the Empire for aiding a group of suspected rebels, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs prepared Lothal Spicebrew using Jho's original recipe after visiting the Ithorian's cantina. Tuggs later included Jho's recipe for this beverage in his cookbook titled The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which was published in 34 ABY.
Behind the scenes
The first appearance of Lothal Spicebrew in the new Star Wars canon occurred in "Empire Day," the eighth episode of the first season of the Star Wars Rebels animated series, which aired on Disney XD on November 17, 2014; however, it was unnamed at the time. Later, the drink was given the name "spicebrew" in Ezra's Duel with Danger, a junior novel adaptation from 2015 of the Star Wars Rebels episodes "Empire Day," "Gathering Forces," and "Path of the Jedi," written by Michael Kogge. In Marvel Comics' tenth issue of the Star Wars: Bounty Hunters comic-book series, written by Ethan Sacks and released on March 17, 2021, the term was written as two separate words: "spice brew".
The name "Lothal Spicebrew" was first used for the drink in the real-world recipe book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which was written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak and published in 2019. The out-of-universe recipe for Lothal Spicebrew calls for ingredients such as stout beer, condensed milk, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and brandy. Monroe-Cassel considered the recipe for Lothal Spicebrew to be among her favorite recipes in the collection. Spicebrew was originally conceived for the 2004 Star Wars Legends novel MedStar II: Jedi Healer, which was the second book in the MedStar Duology and was authored by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry.
