Temple of the Ancients

The Temple of the Ancients, alternatively known as the Temple of the Elders, functioned as a Rakatan temple situated on Lehon. It housed a computer that contained vital information pertaining to the Star Forge. Access to the temple was restricted by a force field, which could only be deactivated by Rakata through a specific ritual or by utilizing an ancient tome; even then, the force field's deactivation was only temporary.

Description

The building itself reached a height of twenty meters. The summit was located on the top of the Temple of the Ancients. It featured an elevator providing access to the main floor, along with a disruptor field that compelled starships, regardless of control, to land on the planet.

Within the Temple Catacombs, a computer held a wealth of knowledge about the Rakata species, the chronicles of their Infinite Empire, and the Star Forge. In 3956 BBY, during Revan's second visit to the Temple, the computer was still operational. However, by 1000 BBY, when Darth Bane arrived, the computer was irreparably damaged and rendered unusable.

History

Jedi Civil War

When a group of Mandalorians found themselves stranded on Lehon, they established a camp at the Temple of the Ancients, where they remained until Revan eliminated them.

During the Jedi Civil War, Revan, accompanied by crewmembers Zaalbar, Mission Vao, Carth Onasi, Jolee Bindo, Juhani, HK-47, T3-M4, and Canderous Ordo, experienced a crash-landing on Lehon while en route to infiltrate the Star Forge. The temple's disruptor field caused this crash. With their vessel damaged and requiring repair, Revan and his companions ventured out to explore the area, seeking potential replacement parts from the numerous crashed ships scattered around and attempting to disable the disruptor field.

Revan encountered The One, the leader of the Black Rakata, who proposed an agreement. The One offered assistance in gaining access to the Temple of the Ancients in exchange for Revan retrieving an ancient tome from the Elders, another tribe residing on Lehon. However, Revan chose to align himself with the Elders. After Revan assisted the Elders in freeing a prisoner from the Black Rakata, the Elders performed a ritual that granted Revan entry to the temple.

The Elders had barely initiated their ritual when Juhani and Bindo urgently approached them, expressing their strong sense of danger within the temple and their determination not to allow Revan to face it alone. Initially, the Elders resisted, but after Revan emphasized that he could not single-handedly destroy the Star Forge, the Elders consented to allow all three Jedi to enter.

Besides encountering battle droids and a contingent of Dark Jedi and Sith dispatched to the temple by Darth Malak, they came across an ancient computer terminal that provided insights into the history of the Rakata, the Infinite Empire, and the Star Forge, instructing them to proceed to the temple's summit to deactivate the disruptor field. Upon reaching the summit, Revan, Jolee, and Juhani confronted Bastila Shan, who had become Malak's new Sith apprentice. Following a lightsaber duel, Bastila attempted to persuade Revan to reclaim his position as the Dark Lord of the Sith, but Revan declined. Bastila then fled, and Revan deactivated the disruptor field emanating from the summit before proceeding to his final confrontation with Malak. Shortly afterward, a celebration took place at the Temple Exterior, where Revan and his companions were personally presented with the Cross of Glory by Admiral Forn Dodonna.

After the Jedi Civil War

The Temple around the time of the Galactic War.

Three centuries later, during the Galactic War, the Order of Revan occupied the Temple and transformed it into a manufacturing facility for creating invincible cyborg supersoldiers equipped with Rakata technology, intended for the Order's Infinite Army. When an assault team invaded, the cyborgs were destroyed, and the overseeing Revanites, Darth Arkous and Rian Darok, were killed rather than captured. Subsequently, Revan arrived aboard a Harrower-class dreadnought and initiated an attack on the Temple in an attempt to eliminate his enemies, but the assault team managed to escape via shuttle.

In 1000 BBY, Darth Bane journeyed to the Temple in search of its secrets. In the deepest sublevel, he ultimately discovered Darth Revan's holocron. Bane studied it extensively until its power depleted and it ceased functioning. The gatekeeper's words from the holocron inspired Bane to establish the Rule of Two. Within the Temple, he was confronted by the Sith Lord Kas'im. Bane and Kas'im engaged in a protracted duel that eventually extended to the steps of the Temple. Bane then managed to defeat Kas'im by striking him with a potent wave of Force energy, causing the Temple entrance way to collapse around him. Bane then departed, and the subsequent history of the Temple remains unknown.

Behind the scenes

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the player has the option to kill the Elders as instructed by the One, rather than siding with them. This action allows the player to retrieve an ancient tome, which Revan can then present to the One, leading the Black Rakata to disable the shields.

Later, within the temple itself, if Revan chooses the dark side, he reclaims his title as Darth Revan, and kills companions Jolee and Juhani. Revan and Bastila return to the Ebon Hawk and inform the crew of Revan's return to the dark side.

Also, the Elders state that only individuals strong in the Force can enter the Temple. However, if the player selects non-Jedi characters from their group after disabling the disruptor field and exiting the Temple, they will also be able to enter.
