Unidentified blue Dathomir bird

A bird species was originally from the planet of Dathomir, located within the Outer Rim. These birds were known to purify the rancor's teeth when they became unclean.

Biology and appearance

These birds displayed feathers of blue, red, and white, along with yellow eyes and an elongated beak. They possessed wings that enabled them to fly, achieving considerable velocities in the air. They were capable of rapidly sanitizing the teeth of rancors, which are large semi-sentient carnivores that are native to Dathomir.

Behavior

These blue birds constructed their nests within the gnarled Grave Thorn trees found on the planet Dathomir. They occasionally pecked at any droids they came across, although they were easily frightened and could be driven off. The birds cooperated to purify the unclean teeth of rancors. Rancors would allow the birds to rest on their bodies.

History

The blue birds originated on Dathomir, a planet within the Outer Rim Territories. Around or following 34 ABY, the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts, an organization focused on the study of various species across the galaxy, developed a strong interest in rancor dental care. They dispatched the Safari droid SF-R3 to Dathomir to discover the method for cleaning a rancor's teeth. SF-R3 was quickly captured in a rancor's mouth, and the rancor subsequently ejected him toward a Grave Thorn tree. A nearby bird pecked at SF-R3, causing him to scare it away. SF-R3 then removed his right arm and wedged it in the rancor's mouth to keep it from closing. This enabled him to clean one of the rancor's teeth utilizing a toothbrush and other instruments, while a group of birds gathered near him and the rancor. One bird entered the rancor's mouth, prompting SF-R3 to shoo it away, inadvertently dislodging his severed arm, which caused the rancor's mouth to shut. The rancor then spat SF-R3 toward a Grave Thorn tree, startling three birds in proximity. These birds, along with several others, then flew toward the rancor and cleaned all of its teeth. Following this, the rancor permitted three birds to perch on its body.
