The severing of one or more limbs, such as arms, legs, hands, or feet, was referred to as Dismemberment. Whether accidental, deliberate, or combat-related, the loss of limbs was not uncommon. Due to their ability to slice through nearly any material, lightsaber combat frequently resulted in this type of injury. Typically, cybernetic replacements were provided to those who had lost limbs.
The term also applied to the severing of droid limbs or existing prosthetic limbs.
Santari Khri, a High Republic Jedi, severed the right arm of Dagan Gera when he attempted to seize an Abyss compass.

During the First Battle of Geonosis, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi severed the two front legs of an Acklay before killing the creature. Jango Fett, a Mandalorian bounty hunter and clone trooper template, entered the fray to assassinate Jedi Master Mace Windu. However, Windu decapitated him, eliminating the Separatist mercenary. Later, Darth Tyranus, the Sith Lord, severed the right arm of Obi-Wan's Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, in a lightsaber duel.
During the Mission to Vassek 3, Gor had his tail severed by Padawan Nahdar Vebb, and his hands by Jedi Master Kit Fisto, before being killed.

Three years after the First Battle of Geonosis, Skywalker gained revenge by severing both of Tyranus' hands with his lightsaber during the Battle of Coruscant. He later decapitated him with Tyranus' Lightsaber at the urging of Darth Sidious, who was using the alias of Chancellor Palpatine.
Grievous suffered multiple dismemberments during the Clone Wars. During the Mission to Skytop Station, Ahsoka Tano, a Padawan, severed his right hand while he was distracted, allowing her to escape. During the Mission to Vassek 3, Jedi Master Kit Fisto severed his legs and later his upper left hand. During the Battle of Dathomir, Asajj Ventress, a Nightsister, severed his upper right arm. During the Battle of Utapau, Obi-Wan Kenobi severed his upper hands.
Following the issuing of Order 66, Maul, now a renegade Sith, fought with several clone troopers during a skirmish aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tribunal. He had been a prisoner onboard the ship before Ahsoka Tano released him as a diversion for the brainwashed clones. In one hallway, Maul used the Force to push back a squad before telekinetically pulling one trooper's right arm through a closing blast door, severing it when the door shut. Maul then stole the trooper's wrist-comm and listened to the clones' transmissions.
After turning to the dark side of the Force, Skywalker severed Mace Windu's right hand to protect Darth Sidious when Windu tried to kill him.

Skywalker later dueled his former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, resulting in the loss of both legs and his left arm. The loss of all of his remaining limbs, burn injuries, and subsequent reconstruction as a cyborg led the fallen Jedi to fully embrace his new Sith identity as Darth Vader, Sith Lord and apprentice to Emperor Palpatine.
As a Dark Lord of the Sith, Vader oversaw the training of the Inquisitorius, a group of fallen Jedi who had betrayed the Jedi Order after Order 66. To teach his Jedi hunters about the pain of loss, Vader severed the right hand of Fifth Brother and the left forearm of Sixth Brother.

During Cal's Quest for Tanalorr, he dismembered many hostiles including, Goroccos, Mogus, and Sutabans.
Rayvis, the leader of the Bedlam Raiders, had his right arm cut off by Cal, but was able to reattach it due to his Gen'Dai abilities. He then had both arms cut off before being killed by Cal.

In the commentary track for the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, Rob Coleman mentioned that when he attempted to inquire with George Lucas about the reason for the gag, Lucas simply smiled and chuckled without providing an explanation.
