Skirmish aboard the Tribunal

In the waning days of the Clone Wars, a conflict erupted on the Tribunal, a Venator-class Star Destroyer, as clone troopers from the 501st Legion's 332nd Division and members of the Coruscant Guard received Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. This directive forced them to betray Ahsoka Tano, the former Jedi Padawan who had been unofficially leading the unit during the recent Siege of Mandalore.

Rex, the Clone Commander, resisted Order 66 just long enough to instruct Tano to "locate" information about the deceased ARC trooper Fives. After Tano freed the renegade Sith Lord Maul as a means of creating a distraction, she investigated Fives' past with the assistance of astromech droids. This investigation revealed Fives' discovery regarding the inhibitor chips that compelled the clones to comply with the order. Equipped with this knowledge, Tano successfully captured Rex and removed his chip.

Subsequently, Tano and Rex battled their way through the vessel while Maul sabotaged the Star Destroyer's hyperdrive. This act severely damaged the Tribunal, causing it to be pulled from hyperspace and placed on a crash course with a nearby moon. Tano and Rex attempted to commandeer a Nu-class attack/transport shuttle, only to find that the clone troopers, under the command of Jesse, were waiting for them in the hangar. Meanwhile, Maul hijacked the shuttle and escaped, forcing Tano to prioritize Rex's safety over capturing him. After the droids' destruction, Tano and Rex made their escape in a two-seat Y-wing starfighter as the starship began to disintegrate. The Tribunal's subsequent impact with the moon resulted in the deaths of all remaining crew members. Before their departure, Tano and Rex buried every clone they could locate, including Jesse, and Tano left her lightsabers at the burial site.

Later, Imperial forces discovered the crash site, where Darth Vader, Tano's former mentor before his transformation to the dark side, recovered her lightsaber.

Prelude

Bio-chip conspiracy

In 19 BBY, the final year of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, clone trooper Tup of the Grand Army of the Republic's 501st Legion experienced a malfunction in his implanted inhibitor chip. This malfunction triggered an early execution of Order 66 during the Battle of Ringo Vinda, leading to the execution of Jedi General Tiplar amidst combat and forcing a Republic withdrawal. The cause of Tup's condition remained officially unknown: the Kaminoan cloners, partially aware of the chips' true purpose, were under orders from the figure they knew as Tyranus to conceal the existence of the chips and Order 66 from the Jedi. Fives, Tup's closest comrade in the 501st and an ARC trooper, grew suspicious and decided to investigate independently. With the help of medical droid AZI-3, Fives uncovered Tup's decayed chip, but Tup died shortly after its removal.

Rex holds the deceased body of Fives.

Driven to uncover the truth, Fives and AZI-3 eventually went rogue in Tipoca City. Fives had his own chip removed, discovering that all clones possessed them. He eventually convinced Shaak Ti, a Jedi Master overseeing clone trooper training, to allow him to present the dangers of the chips to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine on Coruscant. Unbeknownst to all, Palpatine was secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious and the mastermind behind the conspiracy. Approaching Coruscant, Nala Se, a Kaminoan doctor accompanying Fives and Shaak Ti, secretly injected the ARC trooper with a drug that amplified his aggression and paranoia. Fives was subsequently portrayed as insane, becoming a fugitive after being framed for attempting to assassinate the Chancellor. He managed to arrange a meeting with his superiors, General Anakin Skywalker and Clone Captain Rex, at an abandoned warehouse on Level 1325. However, he failed to convince them of his truth before being killed by the Coruscant Guard.

Following this, the official explanation for Fives and Tup's behavior was a rare parasite from Ringo Vinda that caused their chips to malfunction, leading to insanity. Although the Jedi learned of the chips' existence, they accepted the cover story that the chips were designed to suppress aggression and insanity inherited from their template, Jango Fett. Despite remaining skeptical, Rex, feeling obligated to his friend, filed a formal complaint afterwards. In this report, he detailed Fives' belief that the chips might have an ulterior purpose, although he knew it was unlikely to be taken seriously.

The Siege of Mandalore

During the Clone Wars, the planet Mandalore's pacifist government, led by Duchess Satine Kryze, had been overthrown by the splinter group Death Watch, led by Pre Vizsla. Vizsla allied himself with the rogue Sith Lord Darth Maul, a former apprentice of Sidious, to gain power. Maul, with his own agenda, planned to use Mandalore as a base for his criminal organization, the Shadow Collective. After the takeover, Vizsla betrayed Maul; however, Maul easily escaped prison and defeated Vizsla in a duel for leadership, claiming the Darksaber and installing Almec, the Prime Minister, as the public ruler.

Bo-Katan Kryze hoped that a Republic invasion of Mandalore would kill off Maul.

Bo-Katan Kryze, Vizsla's lieutenant and the Duchess' sister, refused to accept Maul's rule. She broke away with her own faction of warriors, initiating a civil war for control of the planet. During the Battle of Mandalore, Kryze rescued Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master whom Maul sought revenge against for bisecting him and leaving him for dead during the Battle of Naboo, and who had also once been in love with Satine. Kryze informed Kenobi that she hoped a Republic invasion would ensure Maul's demise. However, during the battle, Maul was captured and his brother Savage Opress was killed by Sidious, who personally arrived to address the threat to his power.

Gar Saxon and Rook Kast, super commandos, eventually rescued Maul from imprisonment. Kryze, attempting to locate him, witnessed Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi Padawan she had previously encountered on Carlac while Tano was still part of the Jedi Order. Tano was embroiled in a conflict with the Pyke Syndicate on Oba Diah. The Pykes were affiliated with Maul's Shadow Collective, a connection Tano discovered while infiltrating their base. After Tano and her friends, the Martez sisters, escaped the syndicate, Kryze followed them back to Coruscant and recruited Tano to help confront their mutual enemy, Maul.

When Kryze and Tano learned that Maul had returned to Sundari, Mandalore's capital, Tano sought assistance from her former master, Skywalker. However, Skywalker and Kenobi were urgently called away to the Battle of Coruscant. Skywalker divided the 501st Legion, creating a new division. As Tano was no longer part of the Grand Army of the Republic, Rex was promoted to Commander, with Tano serving as his advisor. Unbeknownst to anyone, Maul intended the Siege of Mandalore as a trap for both Kenobi and Skywalker. Having foreseen the rise of the Galactic Empire under Sidious, Maul had a vision that Sidious planned to make Skywalker his new Sith apprentice, and sought to prevent this by killing the Jedi Knight.

Tano faces Maul on Mandalore

Upon discovering that Tano had arrived instead, Maul altered his plans and attempted to recruit her, hoping she would assist him in destroying Sidious. Despite initial temptation, Tano refused after Maul revealed his visions about Skywalker, refusing to believe that her former master would succumb to the dark side. Tano ultimately defeated Maul in lightsaber combat and captured him. The Mandalorians imprisoned him in the last remaining vault constructed by their culture for containing Force-users. After bidding farewell to Kryze, Tano and Rex embarked on the Venator-class Star Destroyer Tribunal to transport Maul to the Jedi High Council on Coruscant, accompanied by a detachment of the Coruscant Guard in addition to the 332nd. Meanwhile, a contingent of clone troopers remained on Mandalore.

The skirmish

Order 66

After the Jedi cruiser entered hyperspace, Tano and Rex discussed their feelings about the war and its impact on them. Rex then received news of an incoming dispatch. He invited Tano to review it, suggesting it might concern General Kenobi's victory over Grievous on Utapau, but she declined, suggesting it was likely more good news. Alone on the bridge, Tano experienced a Force vision of a terrible event involving Skywalker: his fall to the dark side due to Palpatine's manipulations and his own fears.

Rex received Order 66 from Darth Sidious.

In the briefing room, Rex received Sidious' transmission to "Execute Order 66." This activated the control chips within him and all other clones aboard the Tribunal. Tano entered the briefing room to share her concerns that Skywalker might be in danger. Realizing that Fives' suspicions were valid, Rex struggled against the compulsion, dropping his helmet as Tano recognized something was amiss. Two other clone troopers on the bridge, having received Order 66, aimed their blasters at Tano, but Rex ordered them to stop, stating he would handle it. He drew his pistols on Tano, his hands shaking, as she questioned what was happening, yelling at her to stay back and then to "Find Fives!" When Rex began firing, Tano retaliated by leaping onto the holotable, knocking Rex into it. He fell to the floor as she deflected the troopers' shots and telekinetically closed the bridge door.

This respite was brief, as the other door opened and clones led by Jesse, an ARC trooper, charged in as Rex rose. As the troopers surrounded her and opened fire, Tano, atop the holotable, redirected their shots into the ceiling to create an escape route, before fleeing as the room filled with smoke. Her survival was partly due to extensive training from Skywalker, during which the 501st clones repeatedly fired stun shots at her during her time as his Padawan. When the clones ceased firing, they questioned their success, only for Rex to realize that Tano had escaped into the ceiling. Still subconsciously fighting the control chip, Rex was asked by a shock troopers from the Coruscant Guard if he was alright, while being handed his helmet. He dismissed it, stating he was merely tired before donning his helmet again, ordering the shock troopers to proceed to the detention level and execute Maul. Rex informed the other clones that Tano had been marked for death via Order 66, and that any soldier refusing to comply would be executed for treason. He ordered his men to form search parties and spread across the Tribunal to find Tano.

In his cell, Maul sensed the events on Coruscant that led to the execution of Order 66. As the two shock troopers reached his cell and prepared to execute him, Tano intervened, releasing him from the containment vault. Tano demanded to know if he was responsible for the events, but Maul was unaware of the situation. Informed that the clones had inexplicably turned against Tano and were acting out of character, Maul deduced that it was part of Sidious' plan to destroy the Jedi, before attempting to persuade Tano to join forces with him for survival. She refused, explaining that she was only releasing him as a distraction and had no intention of allying with him. Consequently, she refused to provide Maul with one of her lightsabers when he requested a weapon. Upon learning of the prisoner's escape and Tano's continued presence, Rex ordered the destruction of the escape pods and maximum security for the hangar bay.

Tano recruits the help of R7-A7, CH-33P and RG-G1.

Tano infiltrated the Tribunal's droid storage room, activating her old personal astromech droid, R7-A7. R7 expressed his happiness and concern about the situation, prompting Tano to quiet him. The astromechs CH-33P "Cheep" and RG-G1 "G-G" were also activated, inquiring about the events. Tano explained that she was unsure why the clones had turned against her and needed their assistance. Despite the danger, the droids immediately agreed to help. Tano instructed R7-A7 to access the ship's database for secure files on Fives, discovering technical data, images of the ARC trooper, Tup, and Tiplar, and a recording of Nala Se. The Kaminoan scientist reported that Fives had experienced a malfunction in his inhibitor chip, findings accepted by a Senate committee and the Jedi Council. Nala Se also mentioned Rex's filed grievance about the incident. When R7-A7 attempted to open the report on Tano's orders, he found it sealed; however, Skywalker's passcode of 8108 granted them access. After reviewing Rex's report, Tano realized that the "inhibitor" chips were responsible for the clones' sudden hostility and devised a plan to save him.

Elsewhere on the ship, Maul effortlessly overpowered clone troopers using the Force, despite being unarmed. As the clones retreated, Maul cornered a group in a corridor, tearing a panel from the wall as a makeshift shield. He slammed a shock trooper into the ceiling before throwing the panel, decapitating Ridge and another trooper. He used more wall panels to crush two troopers before repurposing them as shields. When the troopers reported the carnage and Maul's advance on the hangar, Rex ordered a retreat and the sealing of the blast door to redirect Maul's path. However, Maul pulled one trooper's arm through the closing door as his comrade tried to pull him back, resulting in the arm being severed. Maul knelt down to listen to the chatter on the wrist comm the clone had been wearing, before stealing it to eavesdrop.

The medical bay

Ahsoka pleads with Rex to let her help him.

As Rex and his men hurried through the hallways to intercept Maul, R7-A7 abruptly rolled in front of him at an intersection, causing him to fall. Before Rex could react, Cheep quickly sealed three of the four blast doors around him, isolating him from the other clones. Rex demanded to know if the droids were crosswired, and R7-A7 played a hologram recording of Tano. In the recording, she told Rex she did not blame him for the events, as he had been unknowingly programmed for them since his youth, and offered her help. When Rex subsequently drew a pistol on R7-A7 and demanded to know Tano's location, she revealed herself behind him. R7-A7 immediately shocked Rex unconscious. As the clones in the surrounding hallways forced their way through the sealed blast doors to reach Rex, Tano confirmed that the hallways leading to the medical bay were clear before draping Rex atop the three astromechs. The other clones managed to breach the sealed doors shortly after, but Tano and the droids had already passed another sealed door, slowing their pursuit.

Upon reaching the medical bay, Tano and the droids immediately placed Rex on an examination table. Tano instructed R7-A7 to scan for Rex's control chip, but the medical droid found nothing, despite multiple scans. Outside, the pursuing clones located the sealed door and inserted a computer spike to manually unlock it. Tano ordered G-G to be ready to reseal the door if the external controls were breached. With time running out, Tano placed her hands on Rex's head and used the Force to search for the chip, chanting the Guardian's Mantra of "I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me." Despite being unconscious, Rex began to chant with her. Tano's effort succeeded, and the chip appeared on the scan. She ordered R7-A7 to begin the removal procedure. The droid voiced his concerns about the procedure's success, and Tano pointed out that failure meant certain death. R7-A7 placed Rex in the surgical pod.

Rex was anguished at having been forced to kill his brothers to defend Ahsoka.

The clones outside eventually unsealed the door, and Tano prepared for battle, ordering G-G to be ready with the door. When the attack began, she deflected the clones' shots and Force-pushed several of them back into the hallway. During the fighting, Tano dropped her shoto after being shot in the wrist, and was in danger of being overwhelmed when Rex shot a few of the attacking clones, allowing G-G to reseal the door. Turning to Rex, who was deeply shaken but fully in control, Tano asked if he was alright. He apologized for attempting to kill her under the chip's influence. Tano asked Rex how widespread the inhibitor chip activation was, and he, remembering Fives' words, revealed that the entire Grand Army of the Republic had been ordered to hunt down and eliminate all Jedi.

Outside, the attacking clones began using arc welders to cut through the door. Wondering how to escape, Tano had an idea and asked Rex to set his blasters to stun as she did not want to kill any of the clones. Rex complied, but sarcastically suggested she try telling that to the other clones. The moment the two cuts in the door converged, Tano Force-pushed it into the hallway, incapacitating multiple clones. Tano and Rex fought off the nearby clones, with the droids sealing blast doors to cut off approaching reinforcements. Tano asked R7 to find a safe route, and when the droids confirmed the escape pods' destruction, Tano stated the hangar was their best option. Rex, noting his men were having a difficult time, asked if Tano had heard about Maul's escape, and she admitted she had released the Sith as a diversion. Incredulous, Rex voiced his disapproval before they left.

Maul destroys the Tribunal's hyperdrive using the Force.

With their commanding officer unaccounted for, the clone troopers informed Clone Lieutenant Jesse that "Target 2" (Maul)'s location was unknown, and Tano had fled the medical bay. Jesse inquired if Rex had aided her escape, but the clones could not confirm this. On his stolen comlink, Maul overheard the entire exchange. Bursting into the hyperdrive chamber, Maul swiftly incapacitated the clones guarding it using the Force, but not before one trooper managed to report Maul's presence. After subduing the clones, Maul dismantled the hyperdrive engines, crushing a squad of clones who had entered the room. Consequently, the Tribunal was forced out of hyperspace and began to disintegrate. Bridge officers attempted to shut down the hyperdrive upon learning of its failure, but their efforts were in vain. Upon exiting hyperspace, the Republic Venator was on a collision course with a nearby moon, becoming ensnared in its gravitational pull. The entire ship shuddered from the impact: Tano and Rex felt the tremor in a corridor, and Rex voiced his concern about the situation.

The hangar

Tano, Rex, and the droids stormed into the hangar control room, swiftly stunning the clones inside. Observing the hangar lockdown, Rex remarked that he would be surprised if his men weren't trying to eliminate them. Tano instructed G-G to investigate the ship's predicament, while R7-A7 was tasked with opening the hangars, and Cheep was ordered to prepare a shuttle. Receiving news that hangar control was unresponsive, indicating Tano's potential escape, possibly with Rex, Jesse dispatched clone units to the hangar, with orders to await his signal before engaging. Maul eavesdropped on this conversation using his stolen comlink.

Upon learning from G-G that the hyperdrive was destroyed and the ship was being pulled in by the nearby moon's gravity, Tano directed R7 to open the main hangar doors. The looming sight of the moon reinforced Tano's resolve to evacuate the Tribunal immediately. Locating a Nu-class attack/transport shuttle in Bay 12, R7 opened the doors, only to reveal a large contingent of clones, led by Jesse, emerging from the other bays, lying in ambush. The clones advanced into the hangar's center, and Jesse commanded them to hold their ground, declaring that anyone attempting to escape would have to get through them. Rex and Tano argued over how they would reach the shuttle. Rex emphasized the clones' willingness to die in their mission to kill them, but Tano countered that they were good soldiers and she refused to be responsible for their deaths. Rex questioned if surrender was their only option, as he saw no alternative to fighting, but Tano refused. Surveying the situation, Tano noticed Jesse's troops positioned on the repair bay lifts and conceived a plan, asking the droids for their cooperation before leading the way out of the control room to explain her strategy.

Tano's plan was for Rex to pretend to have captured her.

Tano's strategy involved Rex feigning her capture as a diversion, enabling the droids to bypass the clones and access the lift controls. Before entering the hangar, Rex hoped that Tano's training in deflecting blaster fire would prove useful against the clones. Just before they entered the hangar, Jesse, after being informed that Maul was also heading towards their location, ordered all available forces to reinforce his position. While the droids worked, Rex stalled by arguing that Tano was no longer a Jedi and therefore not a target of Order 66. Jesse countered that the clones were under special orders from Darth Sidious to eliminate Tano regardless, Rex attempted to appeal to their shared history to buy the droids time, warning that they would be executed for treason if they were wrong. However, his efforts were unsuccessful, as Jesse accused Rex of treason and declared that he would be demoted and executed alongside Tano. At that moment, the droids signaled that they were ready. Rex remarked to Ahsoka that he had never really liked being a commander as they prepared to defend themselves.

As Jesse was about to order the clones to fire, the three droids lowered the lifts in the hangar, causing many clones to fall into the lower levels. Tano used the Force to push Jesse into the hole before she and Rex engaged the remaining troopers on the upper level. During the fight, Maul arrived and located the transport that Tano and Rex were trying to reach. Alerted by the droids, Tano pursued Maul, but he knocked her down through the opening in the hangar where the lifts were before boarding the shuttle. RG-G1 used a cable to pull Tano up while Jesse and the clones below fired at them, with Rex providing cover fire. Reaching the hangar, Tano pursued the shuttle, using the Force to pull it back mid-flight. Rex ran after her and grabbed her wrist to brace her, but R7-A7 warned him about Jesse's approaching reinforcements. Rex lost his grip and turned his attention to holding off the clones. In the crossfire, R7-A7 was struck by a blaster bolt and destroyed.

The Tribunal enters the moon's atmosphere in a fiery descent.

Unable to defend their position, Tano cut a hole in the floor beneath her and Rex, causing them to fall to the lower levels. However, Jesse and his troops, who were attempting to regain control of the lifts, saw them and opened fire. Their attack was interrupted when CH-33P and RG-G1 launched the lifts back up. The clones quickly located and approached the astromechs, who attempted to surrender. The droids were fired upon regardless, resulting in their destruction.

In the repair bay, Tano and Rex searched for a functional ship to escape in while dealing with the few clones remaining on that level. They eventually found a BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bomber docked above a large opening in the ship's hull. After stunning several clones emerging from a repair bay, Rex ran towards the starfighter, urging Tano to join him. Jesse and his forces regained control of the lifts and descended into the repair bay. Tano defended herself against their blaster fire before using the Force to throw Rex onto the Y-wing, which he barely managed to hold onto as Tano was grazed by a stray blaster shot while turning her attention back to the attacking clones. Climbing onto the Y-Wing, Rex regained his footing and opened fire as another lift full of clones, including Jesse, descended into the repair bay. Tano Force-pushed Jesse and some of his men back while continuing to deflect blaster bolts.

As the Tribunal entered the moon's atmosphere, the bridge officers attempted to activate the ship's retrorockets, but the Venator spiraled out of control as an explosion killed everyone on the command bridge. Everyone in the repair bay was thrown off their feet, and Rex, having entered the cockpit of the Y-wing, yelled for Tano to get to the ship. As the clones were knocked aside by falling debris, Tano used her lightsabers to slow her slide before holstering them and running for the Y-wing, but the starfighter was knocked from its mooring just as she leapt for it, sending her plummeting into open air. Rex managed to activate the bomber after a brief struggle to find its power button as it tumbled through the air, before flying back to the plummeting Tribunal in search of Tano. She fell through the sky of the moon, and after being spotted by Rex, he opened the gunner's cockpit, but Tano lost her grip and was blown away during her first attempt to board the starfighter. Tano landed on and ran along several large pieces of debris to reach Rex as he pulled the Y-wing closer to her before she made her second jump. Finally grabbing hold of the Y-wing, Tano pulled herself into the gunner's seat as Rex maneuvered the starfighter away from the debris. As the pair flew off, the Tribunal crashed onto the surface, killing everyone still on board.

Aftermath

Ahsoka Tano and Rex buried their former comrades, leaving behind a makeshift graveyard later discovered by the Galactic Empire.

Following the battle, Tano and Rex landed near the wreckage of the Tribunal. They gathered supplies and components from the crash site to repair the Y-wing and the recovered R7. Tano and Rex also buried every clone body they could locate, including Jesse. Standing before the graves, marked with the clones' helmets on poles, Tano, overwhelmed with anguish and defeat, left both of her lightsabers to simulate her death. R7 was also repaired. With the Jedi Order nearly extinct, with Skywalker—now the Sith Lord Darth Vader—having even assaulted the Jedi Temple directly, the Republic was transformed into the Galactic Empire by Sidious after Order 66 was issued. Simultaneously, the Clone Wars concluded as Skywalker massacred the Executive Separatist Council and commanded the Separatist Droid Army to deactivate.

After departing the moon, Tano learned of the death of her friend, Senator Padmé Amidala, and the three journeyed to Amidala's homeworld of Naboo so Tano could attend her funeral in the city of Theed. Landing their ship in a river valley near the city, Rex and R7 remained behind while Tano infiltrated the city. Tano was recognized by Alderaanian Senator Bail Organa during the funeral procession, who followed her into an area of the Theed Royal Palace to speak with her, curious about her presence despite the danger. Organa provided Tano with a comlink to contact him if she needed assistance, although Tano was weary of fighting, and Tano escaped before patrolling clones could see her. After leaving Naboo, Tano and Rex separated, with Rex keeping the Y-wing and R7 being given to the Martez sisters.

With the sisters' help, Rex located the Bad Batch, a group of rogue clone commandos who had been immune to Order 66. He learned from Tech that the Empire had officially declared him killed in action, which he found useful. Realizing the Batch had not removed their inhibitor chips, Rex had them meet him on Bracca to do so, inspired by his own experience to use the medical bay of a wrecked Venator. Rex vaguely mentioned the skirmish to them, but did not elaborate when Echo asked him how he had gotten his chip out. After the surgeries had been performed, with some difficulty subduing Wrecker after his chip went off, Rex parted ways with them, telling them to look him up if they wanted to join his work against the Empire.

Haunted by the events, Tano carried lingering guilt over Maul's escape, as the Jedi were no longer present to protect the galaxy from his malice. Tano would join Organa's rebel movement over a year after the Clone Wars ended, following two encounters with Inquisitors, Jedi hunters serving the Empire: the first with the Sixth Brother during an uprising on the farming moon Raada, and the second with the Eleventh Brother at a farm village on a different world, with both Inquisitors defeated unarmed. As both incidents resulted in civilian casualties, Tano requested Organa and his people to evacuate the survivors of the attacks as a favor, before deciding to take his offer to get back into the fight. Tano became an intelligence agent operating under the codename Fulcrum.

Darth Vader found Ahsoka's lightsaber at the crash site.

Years into the [Imperial Era](/article/imperial_era], the wreckage of the Tribunal was discovered by Imperial forces. Vader visited the now snow-covered site accompanied by stormtroopers. At the crash site, he found Ahsoka's lightsaber buried in the snow, along with a damaged 332nd Company helmet. He inspected the lightsaber, taking it with him, knowing in his heart that Tano was still alive.

Rex eventually resided on the planet Seelos with fellow clones Wolffe and Gregor, who had also had their chips removed at some point. He reunited with Tano fifteen years after the Clone Wars ended, when she sent the Spectres to recruit him into the rebellion. Dealing with his own trauma over Order 66, Rex did not tell Jedi survivor Kanan Jarrus, who was distrustful of clones, the specifics of how his chip had been removed, implying it had been removed before the order was given. And Rex remarked to Kanan that they all got a choice.

Maul secretly controlled the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn during the early years of the Imperial Era, but eventually became stranded on the dark side-aligned planet Malachor. There, he encountered Tano again when she visited the planet with Jarrus and his apprentice Ezra Bridger. The three light-siders briefly allied with Maul to defeat three Imperial Inquisitors who came to the planet, but after Maul's inevitable betrayal, Tano declined a rematch, tasking Jarrus with defeating Maul as she sensed a greater threat approaching. After being thrown off the Malachor Sith Temple by Jarrus, Maul escaped the planet in a TIE Advanced v1 belonging to one of the dead Inquisitors. Maul was eventually killed on Tatooine by his old enemy Kenobi after tracking the Jedi Master to the planet.

Behind the scenes

Appearances

The battle on the Tribunal was first seen in "Shattered," the second-to-last episode of the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which premiered on Disney+ on May 1, 2020. It was first alluded to, indirectly, in the Star Wars Rebels episode "The Lost Commanders," which premiered on Disney XD on October 14, 2015.

Continuity

The novel Ahsoka's initial description of Tano and Rex's Order 66 experience was retconned.

The 2016 novel Ahsoka, penned by E. K. Johnston, also indirectly referenced Tano and Rex's escape from Order 66. However, the novel's details were almost entirely retconned by the seventh season of The Clone Wars. During the novel's writing, Johnston was instructed not to include action sequences pertaining to Order 66 or the Siege of Mandalore due to the existence of the seventh season, which Lucasfilm was secretly developing. She did, however, incorporate plot elements that Clone Wars writers Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz had outlined for the version of the Siege of Mandalore arc existing when the series was initially canceled. In Ahsoka, Tano, Rex, and Maul were still on Mandalore when Order 66 was executed. Tano faced the choice of either eliminating Maul or saving Rex, and the rogue Sith escaped after she prioritized the latter. Fleeing the clones, Tano and Rex faked their deaths by burying the corpse of another clone in Rex's armor and erecting a headstone claiming they killed each other, before parting ways and leaving Mandalore in separate ships.

Only two details from the novel remained in the TV episodes, both with differences. The first was Tano being forced to make a choice between dealing with Maul or saving Rex's life, as "Victory and Death" instead has Tano's choice regarding Maul being her attempt to stop him from stealing a shuttle to escape. The second detail, Tano abandoning her lightsabers upon a grave to fake her death, is different in the location, the time of day, the nature of the grave, the way she abandons the weapons and how many she is seen leaving behind: in the novel, Tano placed both sabers on Rex's false grave on Mandalore at night, whereas "Victory and Death" has her dropping only her primary lightsaber by the graves of the 332nd Division on a moon in the daytime, although her official StarWars.com Databank entry confirms she abandoned both lightsabers there.

Several sources released before the seventh season of The Clone Wars, including "The Lost Commanders" and the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition, stated that Rex had already had his inhibitor chip removed before Order 66 was issued. "Shattered" instead depicts it being removed shortly afterwards.
