AZI-345211896246498721347

AZI-345211896246498721347, a medical droid, provided his services to the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. The ARC trooper CT-5555, known as "Fives," thought numerical designations were belittling, so he nicknamed the droid AZI-3. The genetically-engineered clone Omega simply called him AZ. In 19 BBY, AZI-3 formed an unexpected bond with Fives as they collaborated to investigate a supposed "tumor" that led Fives' fellow soldier, CT-5385 "Tup," to assassinate the Jedi General Tiplar. Their investigation revealed that all clone troopers had been implanted with inhibitor chips for a clandestine purpose, which was later revealed to be Darth Sidious's planned Great Jedi Purge.

Following the death of Fives and the ultimate success of Sidious's scheme, AZI-3 continued his duties at Tipoca City until the Galactic Empire destroyed the settlement soon after. He managed to escape the destruction with the assistance of Omega and the rogue Bad Batch. For a brief period, he worked for the Trandoshan Ciddarin Scaleback at her parlor on Ord Mantell. After Scaleback's betrayal of them to the Empire, AZI-3 fled with the Bad Batch. Ultimately, he chose to remain with the Bad Batch on Pabu.

Biography

An unlikely friendship

AZI-3 was stationed at the medical center within Tipoca City on the planet Kamino. He was present when CT-5385, known as "Tup," a [clone trooper](/article/clone_trooper] suffering from a mysterious ailment that caused him to attack and kill Jedi General Tiplar, arrived. AZI-3 was tasked with overseeing the tests on CT-5555, or "Fives," to determine if he had been exposed to the same condition that affected Tup.

AZI-3 with Fives.

Driven by a desire to aid Tup, his comrade, Fives argued to AZI-3 that failing to help the patient was contrary to his programming. After persuading AZI-3 to assist him, Fives explained to the droid that clones no longer used numerical designations in these days and expressed his deep bond with Tup. AZI-3 suggested performing a level 5 atomic brain scan on Tup. However, Nala Se, the Kaminoan Chief Medical Scientist, denied the request, claiming that a post-mortem dissection would yield the necessary results. Unbeknownst to AZI-3 and Fives, Nala Se was attempting to conceal the presence of inhibitor chips within all clone [troopers](/article/trooper], which were crucial to Darth Sidious' Order 66.

Continuing his collaboration with Fives, AZI-3 performed the procedure, eventually conducting a biopsy based on the scan results, and discovered a peculiar "tumor" inside Tup. It was revealed that the tumor was, in fact, a control chip. Upon its removal, Tup perished. Shortly after, Nala Se and Jedi Master Shaak Ti confronted AZI-3 and Fives. Following a discussion, Shaak Ti and Nala Se agreed to transport the "tumor" to the Jedi Temple and then the Grand Republic Medical Facility for further examination.

Unmasking a conspiracy

As a consequence of assisting Fives in defying the orders of his superiors, AZI-3 was scheduled to undergo a memory wipe in order to erase his knowledge of the chips and their malfunction. En route, AZI-3 casually informed Fives that the clone trooper was also slated for a memory wipe and reassignment to sanitation duties. Realizing that the Kaminoans were attempting to conceal a conspiracy, Fives broke free from his captors and fled the medical suite, accompanied by AZI-3. They absconded with a Kaminoan flight pod from a hangar and soared into the skies above Tipoca City.

Fives then revealed to AZI-3 his plan to use the flight pod's autopilot to divert the Kaminoan security forces while he and AZI-3 returned to the clone laboratories to continue their investigation into the "tumors." Fives propelled AZI-3 into the sea before jumping in himself. AZI-3 then disclosed that he could reconfigure his body into a makeshift hover mode. AZI-3 and Fives re-entered Tipoca City through a service hatch. Under Fives' direction, AZI-3 lured another clone trooper into the service area, allowing Fives to knock him unconscious and steal his armor.

The pair proceeded to Kamino's Genetic Records Hall, where AZI-3 compared the "tumor's" DNA to that of the late Jango Fett, the genetic template for the clone troopers. The scan confirmed that the "tumor" did not match Fett's genotype and was an organic chip implanted into Tup. After Nala Se discovered their presence, AZI-3 and Fives evaded Shaak Ti and several clone troopers through a ceiling hatch. While traversing the service tunnels, AZI-3 speculated about the chip's unknown purpose. Fives persuaded AZI-3 to operate on him to determine if he also had the implant.

Fives is operated upon by AZI-3.

After locating a sterile room, AZI-3 operated on Fives and discovered a healthy chip inside his head. The two then made their way to the embryo room. Along the way, they passed through a training room, and AZI-3 attempted to distract the Kaminoan instructors by singing. Upon entering the embryo room, AZI-3 and Fives discovered that all of the clone embryos had been implanted with the chips at the third stage of their development. Shaak Ti, Nala Se, and several clone troopers soon cornered the two fugitives. Se wished to eliminate Fives, deeming him an "aberrant" clone who was Kaminoan property. However, Ti insisted that the clones belonged to the Galactic Republic and convinced Se to allow Fives and the chips to be presented to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, secretly Darth Sidious.

AZI-3 expressed joy at having helped Fives present his case to Se and Shaak Ti. He escorted Fives to a transport that took him to the galactic capital, Coruscant. Despite the efforts of AZI-3 and Fives, Darth Sidious and his Sith apprentice Darth Tyranus successfully conspired to prevent AZI-3 from revealing the existence of the inhibitor chips to the wider public. The concealed clone inhibitor chips would play a significant role in facilitating Darth Sidious' Great Jedi Purge at the end of the Clone Wars.

Early Empire

Changes on Kamino

Before Clone Force 99's arrival on Kamino, AZI-3 developed a connection with the modified clone Omega, who was working as a lab assistant for the Kaminoans at the time. Omega frequently assisted the droid by adjusting his boosters. Shortly after the execution of Order 66 and the formation of the Galactic Empire, AZI-3 conducted medical checks on CT-1409 "Echo" after he was knocked unconscious by a clone trooper during a brawl in the mess hall on Kamino, following the Bad Batch's return from their mission on Kaller. Echo initially panicked upon waking up in the medical bay, but Omega calmed him down, and AZI-3 assured him that his condition was stable. When the rest of the Bad Batch arrived, the droid worriedly informed them that they were all genetically defective clones. Wrecker was alarmed by the announcement, but the others were already aware of this and did not react. AZI-3 departed after telling them he would leave them to process their shock.

AZI-3 was shot by a shock trooper officer.

Later, AZI-3 entered Clone Force 99's barracks with Omega, who wanted to learn more about the squad while they were away on a mission. AZI-3 initially objected to their presence in the barracks until Omega convinced him that they were there for research. Convinced, AZI-3 began searching through Clone Force 99's belongings to find what they were "researching," at one point being startled by a dismembered B1-series battle droid head. As Omega and AZI-3 attempted to leave the barracks covertly, they were stopped by a shock trooper officer, who tried to detain Omega. AZI-3 attempted to intervene, stating that they were official Kaminoan personnel; however, the officer stunned AZI-3 and took Omega to the brig. Omega later escaped Kamino with the Bad Batch.

AZI-3 was later present during CT-9904 "Crosshair's" medical evaluation, overseeing the procedures and confirming that his vitals were at optimal levels. Greeting the clone, the droid assumed he would be pleased to hear the news, but Crosshair simply ordered the droid to leave, which AZI-3 did. While a fugitive, Omega was captured by the bounty hunter Cad Bane, who had been hired by the Kaminoans. Bane's droid, Todo 360, had been damaged during her capture, and Omega eventually persuaded him to let her fix him, a task he had been unable to accomplish. After reattaching his leg, Omega performed a booster adjustment, comparing it to what she had done for AZI-3, before rendering Todo unconscious in her attempt to escape.

AZI-3 hid in Nala Se's private lab until the arrival of the Bad Batch.

The Empire ultimately terminated the Kaminoans' cloning contracts and began moving all valuable personnel, data, and equipment out of Tipoca City. Nala Se was taken into Imperial custody after Vice Admiral Rampart discovered that she had been preparing to flee the planet with other medical personnel. As part of the operation, the Imperials began deactivating the city's droids en masse, as well as rounding up important scientists and killing anyone who refused to cooperate. Witnessing this, AZI-3 managed to escape and hide in Nala Se's private lab beneath the city. He encountered the Bad Batch and Omega there when they infiltrated the city via a secret landing platform connected to the lab, hoping to rescue squad leader Hunter, who had been captured by the Empire. AZI-3 initially surprised the group, who pointed their weapons at him, but stood down when Omega recognized him. Omega took AZI-3 with them in the rescue. He remained with Omega when the Batch confronted Crosshair alone, only to fall into his trap. AZI-3 and Omega assisted the Batch by reactivating the training droids.

Fleeing Tipoca City

After Imperial Venator-class Star Destroyers destroyed Tipoca City, sending it to the bottom of the ocean, AZI-3 helped Omega free Crosshair from debris before he drowned. Upon reuniting with the others, following Tech's instructions, he cut a hole from the lowest room of the city into the underwater pipeline that would lead them back to the Marauder. AZI-3 helped reactivate the power but ended up short-circuiting it when driving away an underwater predator that was attacking the Batch. The pipe led them back to Nala Se's secret lab, but after some time, they conceived the idea of placing themselves inside large medical capsules to float to the surface. Crosshair suggested that AZI-3 should guide them, and despite being dangerously low on power, AZI-3 agreed to the plan.

After getting in, they detonated explosives on the windows to flood the lab. While guiding the capsules around sinking debris and towards the surface, AZI-3 had to rescue Omega by cutting away heavy debris, which caused him to lose all of his power. Completing the task and saving Omega, he shut down and sank into the ocean. Not wanting to lose him, Omega opened her capsule and dived after him, almost drowning herself in the process. However, Crosshair shot a grapple onto AZI-3 and pulled the two up to the surface. Upon returning to the Marauder, Wrecker carried the powerless AZI-3 into the ship to recharge.

With Clone Force 99

Once fully recharged, AZI-3 worked for Ciddarin Scaleback as a waiter at her parlor on Ord Mantell. When Clone Force 99 returned from their mission on Aynaboni, he greeted them with his full name, only for Wrecker to interrupt by reminding him that they already knew. AZI-3 then informed them that Scaleback had been extremely vocal about her displeasure at their lateness, which was not a surprise to Echo. AZI-3 later offered drinks to Echo while Scaleback discussed a new mission, but the clone did not notice him.

AZI-3 later helped to heal Clone Force 99 after their failed mission and the loss of Tech. Soon Scaleback betrayed the clones to the Empire, prompting Hunter to instruct Omega to escape through the mining tunnels with AZI-3. However, Omega, not wanting to lose another one of her brothers, disobeyed Hunter's order and went through the vents, where they emerged to find Hunter and Wrecker captured. Omega told AZI-3 to find Echo while she tried to save her brothers, but she was later stunned by clone commando Scorch from behind. AZI-3 and Echo hurried to the rescue, which led them to hijack an Imperial walker, only to be shot down by another. The two then went with Hunter and Wrecker back to the Marauder to pursue the shuttle that had Omega. Unfortunately, the Imperial shuttle managed to take off and left Ord Mantell without leaving any trace of where they went. They later jumped into hyperspace, and as AZI-3 and the two clones mourned, Hunter vowed to search throughout the galaxy to find Omega.

AZI-3 would eventually reside on Pabu. Hunter and Wrecker eventually found Omega, who had escaped with Crosshair's help, and brought the two to Pabu. As Crosshair struggled to adjust to the easygoing life on the island, AZI-3 helped Crosshair with target practice, hovering over the water and holding out fruit for Crosshair to aim at. AZI-3 helped track Crosshair's accuracy for him. When Pabu was attacked by the Empire, AZI-3 helped to heal Wrecker after The Marauder was destroyed. When later scouting, he then found Phee Genoa who he then briefed about the Imperial search on Pabu. He then took her to The Bad Batch through a trapdoor to where they were staying.

Characteristics

AZI-3 was an AZ-series surgical assistant droid with masculine programming. He was an optimistic, "by-the-books" droid who generally adhered to protocol. AZI-3 was also a skilled surgeon and familiar with the computer systems at the Tipoca City cloning facilities. He had a fondness for research assignments, telling Omega that they were his "favorite."

AZI-3 deeply cared for his clone trooper patients. Fives capitalized on AZI-3's dedication to his patients to persuade the droid to help him investigate a "tumor" affecting his comrade Tup. AZI-3 displayed considerable bravery and loyalty to his unlikely friend Fives during their mission. AZI-3's knowledge of the Tipoca City cloning facilities enabled him to help Fives discover that all clone troopers were implanted with inhibitor chips for an unknown purpose, later revealed to be Order 66.

Equipment

AZI-3 was a small, floating medical droid with a humanoid head and torso, and several collapsible arms for performing surgery, which also possessed an integrated scomp link to interface with terminals. He had repulsorlifts that allowed him to float. AZI-3 was equipped with several survival modes, including one that allowed him to function as a miniature speeder.

Behind the scenes

AZI-3 made his debut in The Clone Wars: The Lost Missions episodes "Conspiracy" and "Fugitive," which premiered on the German TV network Super RTL on February 15, 2014 and were later released in the US and Canada via Netflix on March 7, 2014. Ben Diskin provided his voice.
