Sundari

Sundari, a city that was the capital and was domed, served as the heart of the planet of Mandalore. Located within Mandalore's deserts, the city was shielded by a bio-dome, an essential structure that allowed the city's existence on a planet made harsh by years of Mandalorian conflicts, which had rendered the planet a desert. Under the pacifistic New Mandalorian government, with Duchess Satine Kryze at its helm, Sundari faced numerous assaults from the splinter group Death Watch. During the Clone Wars, Death Watch seized control of the city, aiming to bring back Mandalore's warrior traditions. Soon after, a civil war erupted among the Death Watch factions because the Sith Lord Maul had taken over Death Watch.

Following the Galactic Empire's occupation of Mandalore, Sundari met its end during the tragic event known as the Night of a Thousand Tears.

Description

The interior of the domed city of Sundari was full of beautiful architecture.

Sundari, a city protected by a massive bio-cube, was situated in a desert environment, serving as the capital for the New Mandalorians. Enclosed within its walls was one of Mandalore's most active mines for beskar, providing the city with critical resources and a significant strategic advantage. The entrances to these mines were located beneath the Civic Center in Sundari, the capital city. Beneath the Mines of Mandalore were the Living Waters. According to the Mandalorian Creed, a Mandalorian who removed their helmet could seek redemption by immersing themselves in the Living Waters.

Within its dome, Sundari was structured as a multilevel urban center, featuring towering structures built from permacrete and transparisteel. The city was a radiant display of the distinctive translucent architectural style that was widespread on Mandalore. The integration of transparent and translucent panels and windows was a common design element, frequently arranged in geometric patterns. Many of the bridges and floors were also transparent, allowing visibility both upwards and downwards through the buildings and structures, similar to looking through a window.

History

Clone Wars

Pillar of neutrality

Duchess Satine Kryze ruled Mandalore from Sundari during the beginning of the war

During the Clone Wars in 21 BBY, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi journeyed to Sundari. He was dispatched to investigate allegations that Duchess Satine Kryze, the leader of the New Mandalorians, was guiding Mandalore into an alliance with the Confederacy of Independent Systems after an attack on a Republic cruiser. The Duchess clarified to Kenobi that the Death Watch movement was responsible for the attack, in collaboration with the Separatists. Subsequently, Death Watch orchestrated a bombing at the Peace Park's Memorial Shrine. Kenobi identified the bomber, who then chose to commit suicide.

A parade took place to celebrate the arrival of Padmé Amidala, the Senator from Naboo. During this time, Moogan smugglers brought Ardees Beverage tea. Unintentionally, the smugglers diluted and poisoned the tea with slabin, leading to an outbreak of illness among schoolchildren across the planet. Fortunately, Amidala, Kryze, and her bodyguards brought a stop to the smuggling operation. After it was discovered that Almec, Mandalore's prime minister, and the secret service were behind the smuggling, Kryze, Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, and Korkie Kryze's cadets arrested him.

Sundari was later selected as a neutral ground for negotiations between the Republic and the Confederacy. However, the negotiations ended when Tano rescued Lux Bonteri, the former Senator of Onderon, from Dooku's executioners. A battle began between the commando droids and Captain Taggart's Senate Guards.

Maul's vision

Death Watch successfully overthrew the pacifist regime

Following the rescue of the former Sith apprentice Maul by his brother Savage Opress and his healing by Mother Talzin, the two renegade Sith brothers turned their attention to Mandalore, assembling the Shadow Collective, which included allies such as Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, and, most importantly, Pre Vizsla and Death Watch. Maul conceived a strategy to seize Mandalore, invading Sundari with his criminal forces and positioning Death Watch soldiers to liberate them, thus transforming what the public had considered a terrorist group into liberators. Vizsla was to become Mandalore's ruler, but Maul killed him in combat, claiming the Darksaber and installing Almec, the previously disgraced prime minister, as the public figurehead of his rule.

Maul also killed Duchess Satine. However, after Darth Sidious defeated him, seeing Maul as a significant threat, Almec maintained his control over Sundari and Mandalore. Later, Gar Saxon and Rook Kast rescued Maul from a prison on Stygeon Prime, and after reuniting his allies, he returned to Sundari, using it as his base of operations to carry out his schemes across the galaxy.

The war arrives

Eventually, Bo-Katan Kryze, a former lieutenant in Death Watch who departed after Maul's takeover, enlisted the help of Galactic Republic forces to help her remove Maul. Accompanied by Ahsoka Tano, the former Jedi Padawan, Rex, the recently promoted Clone Commander, and the 332nd Division, their forces arrived at Sundari and engaged in a violent battle against Maul and his Mandalorian super commandos. Maul's forces were pushed back, but Maul, sensing the approaching chaos that would engulf the galaxy, made a final attempt to lure Tano to the Sundari palace, hoping to recruit her to his side and prevent the violence he foresaw. However, Tano rejected his offer, defeated him in a duel, and captured him as Maul's remaining forces were defeated in the city.

Following the battle, Republic forces remained in Sundari, and after Order 66 and the proclamation of the new Galactic Empire, the new regime occupied Sundari.

Imperial Era

Sundari during the Imperial Era

During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Tiber Saxon, the Imperial Governor, had his command ship positioned above Sundari during a civil war. Rebel forces allied with Clan Kryze and Clan Wren destroyed the ship.

As the Mandalorian resistance, various Mandalorian clans joined forces to combat the Empire. Realizing they couldn't control Mandalore, the Empire initiated the Great Purge of Mandalore against the Mandalorians. During the Night of a Thousand Tears, TIE/sa bombers bombed the domed cities of Mandalore, including Sundari, while KX-series security droids and probe droids searched the urban ruins to kill any survivors.

New Republic Era

Sundari was laid waste by the Empire.

In 9 ABY, Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, and Grogu landed outside of Sundari's ruins. Alamites who had taken up residence in the ruins attacked Djarin and R5-D4.

A picture of Sundari from when Maul was planning his takeover of Mandalore was in "Index of Organizations," a survival guide distributed by Carson Teva during the New Republic Era. Sundari was also mentioned in "Mandalorians Through the Ages," a publication by the historian Eloc Throno, which detailed Sundari's history and the events of the Clone Wars.
