Vintrium was a precious ore that could be discovered on the planet Mapuzo, situated in the Mid Rim region. In its unrefined state, the substance was highly-flammable; however, after proper refinement, it could endure significant blasterfire. The mining sector of Mapuzo was heavily reliant on vintrium, which attracted the Galactic Empire, who established a garrison on the planet to supervise its production.
During 9 BBY, Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith, tracked down his former Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, on Mapuzo and trapped him within a quarry located outside a small village. In an attempt to inflict suffering on his adversary, Vader overturned a vintrium container and ignited it with his lightsaber before employing the Force to throw Kenobi into the resulting conflagration. Due to the extreme intensity of the flames, Kenobi was forced to seek treatment in a bacta tank on Jabiim.
Vintrium initially entered canon through the 2021 audio drama The High Republic: Tempest Runner by Cavan Scott, and later made its first live-action appearance in the third episode of the 2022 Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi. It originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, appearing in supplements to Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game such as Goroth: Slave of the Empire.
