In the annals of the Lost Tribe of Sith, there existed a male Keshiri Lord named Viun Gaalan, whose striking physical appearance garnered considerable admiration. The year 43 ABY saw Lord Gaalan leading a convoy of shuttles, dispatched from the Tribe's armada, towards the surface of the planet Dathomir. Their mission: to engage in negotiations with the Nightsisters clan, a group of witches. Dresdema, the Nightsisters' leader, operating under the assumption that all Sith were female, commanded her witches to attack Gaalan's forces upon discovering the male leadership. Despite a swift defeat and off-world capture of the Nightsisters by the Sith, Gaalan's own departure was complicated by the arrival of Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker and two companions. A fierce duel ensued between Gaalan and Skywalker, during which Skywalker's allies eliminated several of the Sith Lord's remaining comrades. This forced Gaalan to retreat to his shuttle and flee the conflict.
Hailing from the planet Kesh, Viun Gaalan was a male Keshiri. Furthermore, Gaalan possessed a connection to the Force, specifically its dark side, which, when coupled with his remarkable physical beauty, propelled him to the rank of Sith Lord within the Lost Tribe of Sith on Kesh.

In 43 ABY, Lord Gaalan participated in a Lost Tribe mission to the Dathomir system. The objective: to recover Vestara Khai, a Sith apprentice stranded there. Khai was the lone survivor of a strike force recently deployed to the Maw black hole cluster with the intent to kill Luke Skywalker, the Grand Master of the Jedi Order. After fleeing to Dathomir, she contacted the Tribe, arranging for her rescue. Khai also facilitated the acquisition of a group of Nightsister witches for transport back to Kesh by Gaalan's team.
Upon arrival, Gaalan spearheaded a group of shuttles to Dathomir's surface. There, his aide introduced him to Dresdema, the leader of twenty-two Nightsisters and eighteen rancors. The witches, anticipating an all-female Sith delegation, interpreted Gaalan's male presence as a betrayal. Dresdema ordered an attack, plunging Gaalan and his Sith companions into battle. Gaalan immediately targeted a nearby rancor, using the Force to propel himself onto its back. He then decapitated the beast with his lightsaber, while his allies killed the remaining rancors and subdued the Nightsisters.

As the witches were being restrained and moved to the shuttles, Vestara Khai approached Gaalan, informing him of an additional Nightsister she had captured. Gaalan praised her actions and accepted a datapad containing coordinates to the Maw Cluster, the location of a mysterious dark side being encountered by Khai during her pursuit of the Jedi. He then allowed her to retrieve her captive, only to be confronted by Luke Skywalker, his son Ben, and their Force-sensitive companion Dyon Stadd, who had tracked Khai to Dathomir.
After introducing himself to Skywalker, Gaalan declared his intention to kill the Jedi Grand Master and avenge the death of Lady Olaris Rhea, whom Skywalker had killed at Sinkhole Station. Dismissing Gaalan's threats, the Jedi prompted the Sith Lord to ignite his red lightsaber and attack. Gaalan's aide joined the assault, but Gaalan soon found himself facing the Jedi Master alone after his aide was incapacitated. Meanwhile, his aide and two other Sith, a male and a female Saber, engaged Stadd and Ben Skywalker in combat. Despite matching Skywalker's blows, Gaalan watched as the other Sith fell to Ben Skywalker and Stadd. As Khai returned to assist, Gaalan seized a moment of Skywalker's distraction to retreat to his shuttle. He sealed the hatch and fled, using the Force to telekinetically counteract Skywalker's attempt to restrain the shuttle.
Viun Gaalan, a tall, slender, broad-shouldered Keshiri male with lavender skin, possessed a physical beauty that was highly valued within the Lost Tribe. His flawless features contributed to his rise to the rank of Sith Lord, a common occurrence among the Sith elite. Women such as Vestara Khai and Dresdema found him attractive, though Dresdema's Dathomiri belief in feminine superiority remained unshaken.
Gaalan's cultured, rich, and melodious voice conveyed an unnerving pleasantness and an air of authority. He viewed the Nightsisters as primitive and expressed disappointment at being assigned to escort them to Kesh. He paid little attention to Sith apprentices like Vestara Khai, and like other Sith Lords, maintained an expressionless demeanor during casual conversation, even when joking. However, he did commend Khai's actions and openly praised her success upon meeting her in the Dathomir landing meadow. Despite this, he considered Khai expendable and prioritized his own survival when escaping to his shuttle, leaving her to face the Jedi.
Gaalan aspired to greater status within the Lost Tribe, believing that killing Luke Skywalker would bring him such recognition. He also sought to avenge Lady Rhea's death by ending Skywalker's life, but ultimately failed.
Viun Gaalan demonstrated considerable skill with his red lightsaber, beheading a rancor with a single strike. His dueling ability was slightly inferior to Grand Master Skywalker's, whose blade came close to striking the Sith Lord before Gaalan's retreat. Skywalker believed that Gaalan's combat skills were sufficient to challenge Jedi swordmasters like Kyp Durron or Kyle Katarn, but that he would have been a match for the reserved dueling style of Mon Calamari Master Cilghal, or even Skywalker himself, had the Grand Master faced Gaalan immediately after his time beyond shadows in the Maw.
Gaalan also possessed considerable Force strength, using it to perform impressive acrobatic feats. He could leap to great heights while fighting a rancor and maintain perfect balance. He also telekinetically resisted and countered Luke Skywalker's Force grip while escaping in his shuttle.
Viun Gaalan's first appearance was in Aaron Allston's 2010 novel Fate of the Jedi: Backlash, the fourth book in the Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi series.
