XS stock light freighter

The XS stock light freighter, also referred to as the XS freighter, represented a specific model of starship that was constructed by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. These XS stock light freighters, equipped with a pair of dual laser cannons, fulfilled various roles, including the transportation of soldiers and smuggling activities. Despite their eventual obsolescence, these freighters remained in service throughout both the Clone Wars and the Imperial Era. Notably, one such vessel was employed by the Onderon rebels, while another found use among smugglers operating on the planet of Tatooine.

Characteristics

An XS stock light freighter armed with port-side cannons

The XS stock light freighter was a starship of fairly typical dimensions. These ships featured a saucer-shaped body with yellow hull plating, along with a stubby cockpit that projected from the center of the craft, incorporating a small viewport. The rear section of these freighters had heavily armored hull plating and a pair of sublight engines. They were armed with two laser cannons on the dorsal side and two on the port side, although some models lacked the lateral weapons. XS freighters could carry at least two passengers.

Role

Although designated as freighters, the XS stock light freighter was a multi-role vessel, used for both the deployment of soldiers and smuggling operations.

History

The XS freighter was created by the Corellian Engineering Corporation (CEC) more than a century before the Galactic Civil War. When CEC designers began work on the YT-1000 freighter, they drew inspiration from old holograms depicting an XS freighter. As a tribute to the XS freighter, the YT-1000 freighter was designed with a centrally located cockpit, albeit a larger one.

During the Clone Wars, an XS stock light freighter was used by resistance fighter Lux Bonteri in the campaigns of the Onderon rebels. In the year 0 BBY of the Imperial Era, the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure employed smugglers who operated an XS freighter within the Mos Eisley spaceport located on the planet of Tatooine.

By 18 ABY, these ships had been around for many years, and although obsolete, they were still common. The Spice Runners of Kijimi possessed one, called the Ragged Claw. They hired the young pilot Poe Dameron to fly it, and after the Incident on Quintil, it sustained damage while hyperspace skipping. The Spice Runners subsequently repaired it, but they eventually abandoned it because its recognizable nature risked exposing their operations.

Behind the scenes

XS stock light freighters made their debut in the new Star Wars canon in Star Wars: Galactic Defense, a tower defense mobile game that was released in 2014 and discontinued in 2016. Within Star Wars Legends, XS freighters were first seen in the 2011 novel titled The Old Republic: Deceived, which was authored by Paul S. Kemp as part of the Star Wars: The Old Republic multimedia project.

Although XS freighters were not explicitly identified in Galactic Defense, they were later named in the 2018 reference book YT-1300 Millennium Falcon Owners' Workshop Manual. In Galactic Defense, XS freighters appeared in the limited-time event known as "War of Ideals," which introduced Kalani and Lux Bonteri as playable Champions. Bonteri's Champion skill involved summoning two Onderon rebels, who were deployed via one of the freighters.

The Meson Martinet incorrectly depicted as an XS freighter in Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide

The 2018 reference book titled Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide mistakenly portrays the starship Meson Martinet as an XS freighter. However, the ship had previously been identified as a modified CSS-1 Corellian Star Shuttle in the book Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles.
