2163

Designation 2163 was a command battle droid of the OOM series. This droid operated as part of the Droid Army belonging to the Trade Federation during their assault on the world of Naboo in 32 BBY. Subsequent to the seizure of the seat of government, Theed, droid 2163, along with the combat robots he commanded, were assigned to the Theed Hangar. Their mission was to guard the Naboo Royal Starship and various imprisoned members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces.

When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn entered the hangar accompanied by Queen Padmé Amidala and her retinue, 2163 issued an order for them to stop. Following Jinn's declaration that he intended to transport the monarch to the planet Coruscant, 2163 proclaimed that they were being placed under detainment. The Jedi Knight then terminated 2163 utilizing his laser sword.

Biography

Hangar guard

2163 attempted to stop Qui-Gon Jinn and his allies from leaving Naboo.

The OOM command battle droid known as 2163 was produced by Baktoid Combat Automata for utilization within the Droid Army of the Trade Federation. This war machine participated in the Federation's onslaught against the world of Naboo in 32 BBY. After the invaders had taken the main metropolis, Theed, 2163 was assigned to the Theed Hangar, the storage location for the Naboo Royal Starship.

Numerous members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces, who had been captured during the invasion, including several aviators from the Space Fighter Corps, were held as prisoners within the hangar. They were seated on the floor, encircled by a contingent of B1-series battle droids commanded by 2163. The unarmed OOM-series battle droid stood near the ramp leading into the vessel with four B1 droids, including units 1933 and 7169. At that moment, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, accompanied by his student Obi-Wan Kenobi, led Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo, her entourage consisting of Captain Quarsh Panaka, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, her attendants, and several Naboo Palace Guards, into the hangar.

Bisected

Qui-Gon Jinn caused enough doubt among the droids to get close to 2163 before bisecting the droid's torso with his lightsaber.

Jinn advanced steadily toward 2163 and the droids guarding the ship, creating a moment of uncertainty among them. This allowed the Jedi to position himself before the command droid ordered Jinn to stop. The Jedi explained that he was an envoy of Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum and that he intended to transport those present to the planet Coruscant. However, this explanation did not satisfy the command droid, who then ordered that Jinn and the others be placed under custody.

Before the droids surrounding 2163 could even raise their firearms, the Jedi Knight activated his lightsaber and destroyed the command droid, bisecting its torso and simultaneously beheading the nearby 1933. Kenobi then liberated the nearby captives, and together they destroyed the remaining droids in the hangar before escaping with Amidala aboard the Royal Starship.

Characteristics

2163 was a battle droid of the OOM-series, possessing masculine programming and a height of 1.91 meters. Its plating was ivory-colored, with black receptors. It also featured the yellow markings common to command battle droids, along with its designation imprinted on its back in Trade Federation Script.

Behind the scenes

2163 was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz.

2163 made an appearance in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which premiered on May 4, 1999. The droid's designation was not spoken within the film; however, it was visible on its back. The command battle droid was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, the same actor who provided the dubbed voice for the Sith Lord Darth Maul in the same film.

Within the film's script, 2163 is only identified as "Guard Droid" and "Droid Guard," and is only given the lines "Where are you going?" and "You're under arrest!". He is also described as drawing his weapon before being destroyed, although he is visibly unarmed in the final cut of the film. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, 2163 first appeared in the adaptation of The Phantom Menace written by Terry Brooks, which was released before the film on April 21, 1999.
