Club Penguin Star Wars Rebels Takeover

Club Penguin Star Wars Rebels Takeover: A Retrospective. This special event unfolded within the Club Penguin virtual world, a MMO designed for children and owned by Disney. The event spanned from January 22 to February 4 of 2015. The announcement of the event was initially made via an official blog posting on November 26 of 2014.

To unlock exclusive clothing, players were required to fulfill specific objectives. Players who possessed a membership subscription were granted a lightsaber after completing all objectives. With this lightsaber, they could engage in duels against other lightsaber-wielding players and challenge the Grand Inquisitor to a lightsaber duel, unlocking even more exclusive items. It's worth noting that some of the event's special content was exclusively available to those with a membership subscription. The narrative of the event was largely inspired by the first season of Star Wars Rebels.

As this marked the second Star Wars themed event, certain clothing items from the previous Club Penguin Star Wars Takeover reappeared and were made available for purchase once more through the in-game store.

New additions and changes

During this event, several well-known characters from Star Wars Rebels made their debut appearance within Club Penguin. All members of the Spectres crew were featured as penguins. The Grand Inquisitor was also introduced to the game as the event's primary antagonist. Supporting characters from the series, such as Alexsandr Kallus, Maketh Tua, and Cikatro Vizago, were also present. However, they did not play a role in the main storyline. Instead, they were available as costumes for players with a membership subscription to purchase through the in-game shop, depicted as penguins in the catalog.

The island of Club Penguin was visually transformed to resemble Lothal for the duration of the event.

Throughout the event, the Club Penguin island underwent a transformation to mirror the landscape of Lothal. In addition to this, Imperial outposts, residential structures, and Lothal-inspired architecture were incorporated as decorative elements. Numerous recognizable vehicles from the show were also scattered around the island as decorative pieces.

Echoing the Club Penguin Star Wars Takeover, the lightsaber duel system was reintroduced for players who held a membership subscription. Players were presented with the opportunity to engage in duels against the Grand Inquisitor.

The event's storyline was significantly influenced by the first season of Star Wars Rebels. A majority of the missions drew inspiration from Mission in Capital City, while the concluding mission was based on Action at Mustafar.

Plot summary

Kanan makes an introduction and extends an invitation for players to join the fight against the Empire.

Kanan Jarrus introduced himself and inquired whether players were interested in joining the Rebels in their battle against the Empire. Upon accepting the invitation, players gained access to a mission tab where they could view available missions assigned by members of the Spectres. Completing each mission resulted in a unique reward. However, players with an active membership subscription received additional rewards.

The first mission was assigned by Sabine Wren, tasking players with throwing snowballs at 8 Imperial posters. When a snowball struck an Imperial poster, it transformed into a Rebel mural. All players who completed the task received Sabine's airbrush as a wearable accessory. Players with an active membership subscription also received Sabine's armor and helmet.

For the second mission, players encountered Ezra Bridger, who expressed his understanding of the need to prove oneself to the crew. Ezra requested that players recover 10 crates of meiloorun fruit that had been stolen by the Empire. These crates were scattered across the island. Once players had retrieved all 10 crates, Ezra communicated that the food needed to be delivered to the citizens before the "bucketheads" noticed. Kanan interjected, stating that players still had two more missions to complete before he would provide further instructions. All players received Ezra's slingshot as a reward, while players with an active membership subscription also received Ezra's outfit and a wig resembling his hair.

Immediately following this, Garazeb Orrelios introduced himself and assigned players the third mission. He instructed players to destroy Imperial defense towers by throwing snowballs at them. Three defense towers were located on the island, each requiring two snowballs to be destroyed. After all three Imperial defense towers were destroyed, Zeb commented that the Ghost should now be able to fly without issue. As a reward, all players received a flag bearing the phoenix crest that could be used as an accessory. Players with an active membership subscription also received a costume resembling Zeb.

A visual representation of the Spectres used as a player card background. Notably, this was the only instance of Chopper being depicted as an astromech droid.

Hera Syndulla introduced herself and commended the players for their bravery. She then requested that they collect droid batteries for Chopper. Players were tasked with gathering eight droid batteries, which, like Ezra's mission, were scattered throughout the island. After collecting all eight droid batteries, Hera expressed her positive impression of the players. All players were then awarded a hydrospanner, while players with an active membership subscription also received Hera's outfit and a headpiece mimicking her lekku.

For the final mission, players were required to rescue Kanan from the Empire. Upon accepting the mission, players were teleported to a prison ship. Inside the ship, players found Kanan imprisoned within a cell. He warned them that it was a trap and instructed them to throw snowballs at the approaching stormtroopers. Three blast doors were present, with stormtroopers emerging from them. The left blast door opened first, revealing five oncoming stormtroopers. After the player defeated all five stormtroopers from the first blast door, the Grand Inquisitor briefly appeared to announce that the Rebel's journey would end there, shortly before the right blast door opened. Similar to the first blast door, the right blast door also contained five stormtroopers. This time, after defeating all five stormtroopers, all three blast doors opened. Both the left and right blast doors each had five stormtroopers, while the middle blast door had six. After the player defeated all the stormtroopers, the cell holding Kanan unlocked. Kanan acknowledged the player's proven abilities and emphasized the need to escape before the Grand Inquisitor arrived in person. As a reward, all players received a special background for their player card, while players with an active membership subscription also received a blue lightsaber, Kanan's outfit, and a wig resembling his hair and facial hair.

A view of the mission tab, showcasing the two progression bars and the rules governing lightsaber duels.

Players with an active membership subscription gained access to exclusive gameplay and an additional progression bar to unlock even more special items. With the lightsaber obtained from Kanan, players could engage in duels with each other and the Grand Inquisitor. The duel system operated similarly to the game of rock, paper, scissors. The progress bar advanced regardless of whether the player won or lost. There were six checkpoints on the progression bar, each offering a prize upon reaching it. The items included a 614-AvA speeder bike for igloo decoration, a purple lightsaber, Hera's blaster, dual lightsabers, an igloo design inspired by the Ghost, and a costume resembling the Grand Inquisitor, complete with his lightsaber.

Gameplay

The gameplay primarily involved point-and-click mechanics, making it relatively simple and accessible for a younger audience. The missions required players to explore the island, locating and performing specific tasks based on the active mission. Upon completion of each mission, players received unique and exclusive rewards. However, players with an active membership subscription were granted an additional reward.

The event also featured exclusive gameplay for players with an active membership subscription: lightsaber duels. This exclusive game mode functioned similarly to the game of rock, paper, scissors. Players could duel other members or challenge the Grand Inquisitor to progress and unlock even more exclusive rewards.
