Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir, Part One is the introductory issue of the canon comic miniseries known as Star Wars: Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir. Within this comic, Darth Maul, formerly a Sith Lord, finds himself a prisoner of his old master, Darth Sidious, following his capture on Mandalore. His Death Watch loyalists stage a rescue, extracting him from the Spire on Stygeon Prime, after which they link up with additional forces on Zanbar. General Grievous and his Separatist Droid Army pursue them, acting under orders to weaken Maul's power base. The goal is to compel Maul to seek out Mother Talzin, thereby exposing her to the Sith for destruction. A battle erupts on Zanbar between the two factions, resulting in significant casualties on both sides, ultimately forcing Maul to escape and seek out the Dathomir witch.
Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir 1 was penned by Jeremy Barlow and illustrated by Juan Frigeri. It's an adaptation of "The Enemy of My Enemy," a story originally written as a script by Aïda Mashaka Croal and Matt Michnovetz for the sixth season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, which was ultimately cancelled. Its basis in a script from the George Lucas-produced series establishes it as part of the official Star Wars canon. Dark Horse Comics released the 24-page comic on May 21, 2014. Prior to this, six pages were made available on May 3 as part of Free Comic Book Day.

Following Maul's takeover of Mandalore, [Darth Sidious](/article/darth_sidious], his former Sith master, captures Maul. Sidious then imprisons Maul within the Spire, a stronghold controlled by the Confederacy of Independent Systems located on Stygeon Prime. Unbeknownst to Sidious, two Death Watch warriors, named Rook Kast and Gar Saxon, tail him, acting on orders from Mandalorian Prime Minister Almec to liberate Maul. After Maul's liberation, the plan is for him and the warriors to meet up with Death Watch forces stationed on Zanbar.
On Stygeon Prime, Sidious declares that Maul still serves a purpose. Count Dooku, Sidious' current apprentice, interrupts them, which angers Maul, who considers Dooku an imposter unworthy of the Sith title. Sidious and Dooku depart, and Sidious explains that he imprisoned his former apprentice to lure Mother Talzin, the Dathomir Witch, out of hiding so that she can be eliminated. Sidious also reveals his past connection to Talzin, who presented a young Maul to Sidious as a gift. Sidious instructs Dooku to interrogate Maul, seeking information about the Shadow Collective, knowing that making Maul believe the Sith intend to destroy his army will lead him to seek Talzin's assistance.

In the meantime, Kast and Saxon arrive on Stygeon Prime, preparing to rescue their imprisoned leader, who is being held on the seventh level of the fortress. Dooku begins interrogating Maul, using electrocution to try and extract the names of Maul's associates and the location of his base of operations. However, Maul resists the Sith Lord, refusing to divulge any information. Dooku departs just before Death Watch detonates an explosion on the third level of the prison as a distraction, enabling them to access the seventh level. Dooku sees through the deception and orders his battle droids to pursue Death Watch. The two warriors reach Maul in the nick of time, blasting a hole in the interrogation cell wall before escaping the fortress and descending the mountain via zipline. The trio successfully escapes the planet aboard a Mandalorian vessel.
General Grievous leads Separatist forces in pursuit of the ship, acting on Count Dooku's orders. The Sith Lord emphasizes that Maul must not be killed, only weakened, to make him believe the Sith want to destroy his Shadow Collective and seek Mother Talzin's assistance. With Separatist forces hot on their trail, Maul and the two warriors arrive at Zanbar. Maul communicates with Almec via hologram, where the Prime Minister states he ordered Maul's rescue as a favor for Maul freeing Almec from imprisonment on Mandalore. Once again in command of his army, Maul reclaims his Darksaber and informs the Mandalorians that the war they have been yearning for is about to begin.

The Separatists land on the moon and unleash their entire force against Maul, aware that the Mandalorians are a formidable opponent. Death Watch is overwhelmed by the droid soldiers, while Maul engages Grievous in a one-on-one duel. Death Watch suffers heavy losses, but Maul orders his Gauntlet fighters to bombard the area, destroying a large portion of the Separatist force. Maul escapes amidst the chaos and orders his surviving forces to retreat from Zanbar.
After the battle, Grievous communicates with Dooku via hologram, informing the Sith Lord that Maul's army is fleeing, but at the cost of most of Grievous' forces. Dooku reminds the General that these losses are acceptable, as they further the plan to drive Maul towards Mother Talzin. Grievous questions why the witch would reveal herself to Maul and what value Maul holds for her, to which Dooku responds that Grievous will learn in due course.
Darth Maul — Son of Dathomir 1 is based on "The Enemy of My Enemy," an episode that Aïda Mashaka Croal and Matt Michnovetz wrote as a script for what would have been the seventh season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
